Your small retail business can't look bare. If your parking lot is vacant, it seems like nobody is buying from you. Do you like to go to restaurants with an empty parking lot? Most do not. At least park your car in front of your store. If you have a large parking lot, and other small businesses adjacent to you, offer to allow the employees of the other businesses park in front of your business.
Lighting in your small retail business or local business. Natural full spectrum lighting makes the colors in your business stand out. Your displays will stand out much better. It's also easier on the eyes.
Have music in your retail business. Make it loud enough to pick up, but not loud enough to interfere with any conversations. Popular music is good, easy listening is good. A store or other business without music sounds lifeless ands static. Very unappealing.
Have an air purifier running. Stale smells are a huge turnoff. Make sure the trash cans are clear of anything that could smell. There is no need to expend big money here. A small air cleaner in your show area will do.
If you run a local retail store. Please don't smoke in the business. Please don't chew tobacco. I know it's your store. Nevertheless smoking is nauseating to the nostrils of about 80% of the people. Seeing you spit your tobacco in a cup is about as appealing as...well, spitting in a cup. If you decide to completely turn off over half of your customers, smoking or chewing tobacco at your small business should do the trick.
A small retail business or other small business is no place for your beloved shedding dog. Kitties and pet dogs have an odor, no matter how much you adore them. Certain people are terrified of canines. If you have a family pet at your workplace, you are losing income, I assure you.
Your local business is no place to demonstrate your political loyalties. If you have signs up that are political (either Democrat or Republican), you will irritate half the individuals who come in your store. Unless you offer political hats and jewelry, keep it to yourself. Even political bumper stickers will lose you sales.
An OPEN sign is desirable for most small businesses. Using a lighted OPEN sign looks like you are ready for commerce. If you don't have a lighted sign, some individuals will simply believe you are closed.
Keep your business tidy and clean. If consumers track mud into your business, vacuum it up after it dries. If a purchaser makes a mess, and the next buyer can see it, they will assume you made that mess, and simply don't care.
If you let people use your bathrooms, make certain they are sparkling, and have plenty of soap and toilet tissue. Employ an air freshener after each use. If you really never let consumers use your facilities, still spay an air freshener after each use.
For those who own displays in your local retail store that people walking by may see, ensure that they are lighted at night. It aids security, and when you are closed, visitors will still take a look in your windows. Make sure that what they see is appealing.
These thoughts aren't about how to advertise in the traditional way. However ignoring these ideas will lose you business, despite how well you market your local business.
