Recently, omega 3 krill oil has been getting noticed. What most of the marketing claims are related too are about the health benefits and lack of pollutants. There are no claims that I have found on price value. This article will cover these and other points.
Fish oil supplements have been around for decades. The early ones were, to be blunt, bad. Their omega 3 levels were low and most of them were extremely contaminated with various ocean pollutants. There were no antioxidants in them and freshness was always an issue. They were also pretty expensive.
If one reads the websites of various krill oil companies, we will find that all the claims of krill versus fish sources are made by comparing them to older supplements and/or the mediocre stuff that is still out there.
The better fish supplements have come a long way. Comparing krill oil to bad fish products, then and now, is not comparing apples to apples. Let's do that.
1] The omega 3 fatty acids that everyone refers to are DHA and EPA. They are the same, no matter what species they come from. It is the dosage that counts. Krill supplements have 75-80% less omega 3s [DHA and EPA combined] per soft gel capsule.
Krill oil companies try to get around this by saying that it is in a phospholipids form. This is better absorbed by the body than the triglyceride form of most fish oils. True, but the best fish companies use an ester form which is on par with anything out there.
2] It is claimed that because krill are small crustaceans, there are less toxins in them. True, but only when compared to bad fish supplements. The best fish supplements are just as pure, if not purer.
3] Krill is the basis of the food chain for birds, whales and other aquatic species in the Antarctic, north Pacific ocean and other coastal areas near Canada, the U.S. and Japan. Its proponents claim that it is not over harvested like other species. Numerous watch dog groups and even the National Geographic disagree. In the Antarctic alone, it is estimated that stocks are down substantially the last 35 years.
4] There are thousands of research studies that have uncovered the numerous benefits of omega 3s for the heart, brain, eyes, joints, hair and skin. The FDA and other health groups think about 1500-to-2000mg [2 grams] per day is a good dosage to maintain a healthy body. The best selling krill oil products have about 100mg of omega 3 per capsule. To get what the FDA likes, you would need to take over 20 capsules per day. I get my 2 grams of omega 3 by taking four capsules per day.
Summing up, krill oil products do not have as much omega 3 content, can be worse for the environment, are not as bioavailable and will not have less contaminants than a comparable fish oil supplement. However, they will be more expensive.
