The resort of Blackpool is well-known for many things like the Blackpool Tower and Circus, the Pepsi Max Big One at the Pleasure Beach and the historic tramway. However, it is the Festival of Light and the Blackpool Illuminations that is the town's leading attraction.

The blackpool Lights shine every year for sixty six nights starting late August or early September to early November. They light up six miles (10km) of the seafront. It is an extremely spectacular sight and one that is loved by both young and old. The display stretches from Starr Gate at the south end of the town to Bispham in the north.

There are numerous possibilities for viewing the lights. You could, of course, drive yourself although a common way to observe the Illuminations is by Tram. You will no doubt discover that Illuminated Trams shape part of the show and provide excursions that travel the complete span of the Lights. A different option is the Illuminations Coach Tour where you are able to sit back and have a fun-filled trip through the lights with professional commentary, behind-the-scenes secrets and illuminating facts, all supplied by your individual Illuminations Tour Guide.

The Illuminations are far more than just a display of lights. You need to see it for yourself to really understand the experience. There are undeniably lots of coloured lights but they are arranged in lots of formats providing a consistently moving and varying display. There are a number of sections which are best viewed on foot as they are made up of illuminated panels providing an entertaining picture show. There are even laser light shows that will amaze you. Many of the illuminations tell a tale and also incorporate music and water fountains to provide the most remarkable of entertainment.

When you have visited the Blackpool Lights in the past, you might feel you have viewed it all before but you would be mistaken. Each year, there are new sections added and they are always larger and improved and even more spectacular than ever before. The existing Illuminations are re-arranged and enhanced upon every year so there really is always something fresh and exciting.

There is a great deal to see and do in Blackpool during the illuminations. The swirtch-on night is always extremely busy as there is a ceremony which attracts a giant quantity of tourists. The Illuminations are always switched on by a big celebrity and there is an open-air concert leading up to the occasion. October half term is another enormously popular time to see the Illuminations therefore, if you wish to visit during those busy times, you do have to reserve your hotels early.

The resort of Blackpool has a whole lot to offer so it has always been a popular town for summer season holidays. However, as Blackpool Illuminations are staged in the Autumn when most other beach destinations are closing for business, it is also a popular resort for Autumn breaks. Throughout the Illuminations, all of Blackpool's attractions are very much open for business and you will find there are many shows and events to entertain you. A visit to Blackpool Illuminations is not to be missed and will no doubt supply a superb, vibrant and thrilling experience for everyone.
