There appears to be an opinion out there that simply concentrating a nutrient must be good for you. This belief, when talking about fish oil concentrate, is not necessarily correct. This article will cover useful ways to improve your health without needlessly wasting money.
Consumers searching for a supplement with a high fish oil concentrate, are probably wanting the best health benefits that they can find. No problem, except that it is possible to overload your body on anything - including water.
The best sources of fish oil concentrate are the deep water oily species. Since we are dealing with fish, the priority should be quality first and everything else second.
There are many differences in the types of fish oil concentrate. Here are a few highlights.
1] What we are actually concentrating is the omega 3 content. In fish, there are two of them - DHA and EPA. The amount of these two in the product is one of the standards used to separate the good from the mediocre. Too little omega 3 content means too few benefits.
2] Wild, fatty, oily species like salmon or mackerel have a significant amount of omega 3s. Farm raised or the fresh water variety - not so much.
3] DHA and EPA are called essential fatty acids. Many nutritionists prefer to have an excess of DHA over EPA than vice versa. A product that deficient in DHA is not helping you much in many health areas, particularly involving the brain and the eyes. There are many low DHA supplements, mainly because it is cheaper to have a fish oil concentrate with a high EPA mix.
A problem with all fish, but particularly the ocean variety, are the pollutants that are absorbed and passed along up and down the food chain and then to our dinner table. There are some oceans that are more contaminated than others. Traffic from northern Russia to Europe and the Scandinavian countries has clouded the North and Baltic Seas. In the US, there are states on both costs that publish warnings about the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. The FDA and AHA suggest caution in general.
The Southern ocean southwest of New Zealand is probably the best. There is little ocean traffic. The western neighbor is Antarctica. Plus, catches of the omega 3 rich hoki are regulated by the New Zealand government. In other words, very environmentally friendly.
Compare dosage levels. My product has 500mg of omega 3s [280mg are DHA] in each capsule. Visit any store and you will discover supplements which would require three tablets of questionable quality to get a similar dosage.
When it comes to fish oil concentrate, gentle rains are usually better than hurricanes. Many nutritionists believe that two-to-four grams daily is a good dosage for most of us. At these levels, the side effects, if any, should be minimal. You will still get the health benefits at affordable prices.
