Are you searching for cheap scooter insurance? The term scooter is very broad. You could be talking about a small little bike - we used to call them mobile hairdryers although the proper term is a moped. The top speed is about twenty miles per hour so you wouldn't be using them to travel very far.
On the other hand you can have scooters that can go at 100 miles per hour, not that you would be travelling that fast as it breaks most speed limits. These resemble motorbikes and you can expect to pay similar premiums for auto accident cover.
When looking at insurance costs, whether you own a scooter or a moped will play a part. These two vehicles carry different safety restrictions as well as engine sizes, body frames and design. A moped has pedals whereas a scooter is fully motorized. These bikes can run either on gas or electricity.
The make and model will influence the cost of your policy and the law and regulations governing it. If your model is classified as the former you will be prohibited from driving it on the highway but your insurance costs are likely to be much lower.
What factors will the insurance company use to calculate your premium? There are a couple of things they will look at namely:
1) Where you live. Yes the area you live in will have an impact on your insurance quote. If there is a crime problem then the chances of you having your bike stolen are quite high and your premium will reflect this added risk.
2) Where you will store your scooter? If you park it on the street or in your drive, you can expect to pay more. If you use it to travel to work and don't have the use of secure parking, again your premium will rise.
3) How old are you? Yes I know it is not fair to just assume you will drive badly because of your age but actuaries, the people who calculate the premiums, like statistics. Unfortunately the statistics on teenage driving do not make good reading.
4) How long have you had your license? Generally your motor skill improves with practice so if you have only just passed your test you may find it difficult to find cheap scooter insurance.
5) How is your credit rating? I know. You are probably thinking what has this to do with my Vespa but a poor score can represent irresponsible behavior. Although given the current job climate, it can also mean that you have just been unlucky and may explain why you have taken up driving a scooter i.e. to save cash.
6) The make, model and engine type and reinsurance value. These all impact on the price you will be quoted.
Although all insurance companies use similar costing mechanism, quotes can differ considerably so it does check out different companies. Also paying your premium a year in advance will reduce the price you pay for the cheapest scooter insurance.
