All children need to have good quality sleep, but for babies it will have a direct affect on their health and development if they do not sleep well. Seeing a sleeping baby is a joy, but seeing and hearing a non-sleeping baby is a horrible experience for all concerned. Babies love routine, so if you put a baby sleep routine in place, and stick to it, you will find that everyone concerned enjoys a good nights sleep.
Setting good bedtime habits for your baby, is a good thing to get in place early on. A baby will be happier and more contended during the day, if they have a good sleep pattern in place. This will also make it much more likely that they will sleep through the night.
There are a number of things that you can do to get a routine in place:
By letting your baby wind down at the end of the day, they will start to realise that this is what happens at bedtime and therefore sleep better. Bathing, then getting them dressed in a room with dim lights will install a sense of calm and relaxation. Finally, settle them in the cot with a quick story and a cuddle and then quietly leave.
You don't need to follow the above routine to the letter, you may wish to do it in a different order, or have a different routine entirely, but the important thing is that you create a baby sleep routine that you follow night after night after night until it becomes a habit for your child.
As you work through this routine your baby will start to realise that sleep is expected at the end of it. As babies enjoy routine and are creatures of habit they will soon become very accustomed to this. Settling a baby quickly by using a routine very much increases the chances of them sleeping through the night.
Providing a routine and the same sleep environment each time is crucial to providing the ideal scenario for restful baby sleep You should begin a bedtime routine in the early weeks of your baby's life if at all possible but if your baby is already older than this, just get a routine established as soon as you can.
If your baby is still having sleeping problems even after the routine has been put in place, do not panic. Just take a look at the routine and make some changes. Try creating a daytime nap routine as well to see if that helps.
