It can be a very exciting time to plan your kitchen renovation. Kitchens are the heart of the home and deserve to be beautiful and comfortable. There is no shortage of great kitchen designs and materials on the market, but it is not only about aesthetic appeal, practicality is very important too.

First of all, you need to choose materials for your kitchen cupboards and the floor that will be durable and will last a long time. It is all very well to choose fancy materials that look beautiful, but you need something hardy that will last for years to come, and will be able to withstand the high temperatures and substances it will be exposed to whilst cooking.

Wood is always a popular choice for kitchen cupboards, but if you are going to choose wood as a substance, then you need to consider a strong, hardy type of wood. Even if you are going to be looking into paying more than you would like for your cupboards, it is important that you choose a material which will last you for many years, and will not rot or weather away. Remember that wooden cupboards will be exposed to steam from hot pots, and this can be dangerous with regards to rotting. If you are considering wooden cupboards, get a stronger type of wood and one which is sealed for protection.

With regards to the kitchen countertops, many people enjoy the idea of marble. Just because marble is luxurious and more expensive, it does not mean that it is a better substance to use for your countertops. Marble is porous, and is therefore more likely to soak up stains and liquids that are spilt. A practical but beautiful material to use for your kitchen countertop is granite or Caesar stone. Formica is a cheaper alternative to these materials, but may not always last as long as it is a synthetic substance.

For your floors, you will want to purchase something that looks good, but is easy to clean, as the kitchen area is prone to spills and mess. Tiles are the most popular option by far, as they are easy to clean but there are so many options available that you can find some very aesthetically pleasing ones. Wooden floors are not a particularly wise idea in the kitchen, unless they are sealed or laminated, as they will also absorb any spills, and could tend to stain or rot.

You should choose a lovely neutral colour for your kitchen walls, so that you do not get bored of it. Choosing a radical colour may not always be the best idea, because you could find it difficult to find the exact same paint one day for touch ups.

Choose wise sized drawers for storage options. Remember storage space is of the most valuable, as is counter space. Luckily the two come hand in hand, because the more drawers and cupboards there are, the more likely it is for there to be more counter space. It is easy to choose lovely, simple things that will make your kitchen practical and beautiful for years to come!
