The culture of tattooing has come a long way since its beginning, and you won't believe that one of our founding fathers had something to do with tattooing here in America.
The name Thomas Edison is not often associated with tattoos, but he was the creator of the first tattoo machine. Yes, that's right, Thomas Edison was the grandfather of the tattoo equipment (among other things). He originally meant to create an engraving machine, but another scientist named Samuel O'Reilly made modifications to invention, and thus the tattoo machine came to life.
There are a different needles sizes to use in the tattoo machine, all of which are sharp enough to pierce through the skin. The needles are often grouped into labels such as: RL(round liner) RS(round shader) F(flats) M(Magniums). The second way to tell about your needles is then the groupings such as 1,5,7,9,12, these mean how many needles are in that specific group. So for example: the artists is starting the outline for the design that has been applied to the skin, they will start by using a 7RL (7needles grouped together in a round configuration and used for line work). Once they are done with the outline, they would move onto the shade work or coloring in of the design. They may use, depending on the size of design, lets say a 9M ( 9needles grouped one on top of each other to create rows) The needles are housed by the tube tip, which has to be concurrent with the needles, such as for your 7RL you use a Round tip, 9M would be housed in a Flat tip, this insures that the needles stay in place while tattooing the skin and you can adjust the depth of the needles as well. All tips have openings on the bottom base, which allows the tattoo ink to flow from the machine tip to the needles and into the individual's body.
The process of getting a tattoo, depending on your pain tolerance, can be less painful than one may imagine. Many artists also have creams and/or sprays they can apply before they start to help dull the pain, the customer may still feel some pain but less then without the topical ointment. The practice now compaired to ancient times of tattooing have been modernized a great deal, the art has been transformed from day long applications to now recieveing a full tattoo in hours. Artists techniques have also advanced from the ways of the past, they learn new ways to ensure ultimate ink distribution, ink retention, and healing techiniquest that can ensure the life of your tattoo.
All equipment, unless disposable, must be sterilized thoroughly to avoid any possible skin infection, any item that is used that comes into contact with any blood has to be sterilized with a hospital grade autoclave. This is to ensure the health and safety of not only the client but also the artist. It is very very important that all rules and regulations are followed strictly by the Health Board of the city in which the tattoo shop resides.
If by chance you see anything that is not clean or looks a mess, it would be of your best interest not to recieve any tattoos from that establishment. Aside from the design, the most important thing is choosing the right tattoo shop. Don't just pick the closest shop or the cheapest shop, research the area, find all the shops, see who is most popular and have the best reviews. Schedule an appointment to speak with the artist your interested in, view his/her work, make sure they can invison your design how you want it and that they listen to you. Make sure that the shop is clean and sanitary, make sure all products have lids and are closed preventing anything contamintating the items. Look at your tattoo as an investment, you want to make sure and get the best work for the money and time.
Getting a tattoo is a serious decision that should not be takin lightly, you have to invest time into the care and maintinence, and its forever. So plan your tattoo, think of designs that only represent something to you and who you are, make your tattoo unique to who you are or what you may be going through at the time. This way you will most likely not have an issue down the road with a design you put together with the help of the artst, vesus getting your boyfriends name and your no longer together. Now not only do you have a tattoo that you no longer want, but now you have to pay then it actually costs to remove it, along with twice the pain of the original tattoo. So think, plan and be informed on your decisions, and also remember how others will precieve that tattoo? Can you afford to have a tattoo visiable? What about your job? Or furture plans, a hidden tattoo allows you to remain adventurous and remain professional all at the same time.
Tattooing has come a long way since its beginning, just a hundred years ago, the only sort of people who worn tattoos were know as "no good, or rebel bikers" now adays lawyers, teachers, even doctors recieve tattoos Tattoos are artwork in the form of living flesh, the artist brush is his machine and skin is his canvas. Every tattoo has a meaning and/or story behind it and has had a huge impact on today's society, whats your story?
