True, it is difficult to avoid divorce except when a couple faces irreconcilable differences. However, to reach this stage, a couple needs to communicate with each other. Both partners need to listen to each other speak and find value in what each other is saying in order to find peace and contentment in marriage once again.

However, if you have stopped communicating with each other, determine why exactly this has come about. Perhaps you both have high-pressured jobs which leave you with no energy for each other at the end of the day. Making an effort to communicate with your spouse will help energize your relationship and bring it back on track.

In some cases, couples drift so far apart from each other that the time for communication is long past. For them, it is difficult to avoid divorce—in fact, it is the only answer. But if your marriage hasn’t reached the point of no return, perhaps you could consider the tips given below and save your marriage:

Spot your faults: First spot your mistakes and apologize for them. This is the first step towards reconciliation.

Take help: Once you realize you’re facing problems within your marriage, realize the need for help and go out and get it. Do everything it takes to avoid divorce—meet a marriage counselor, read articles and self-help books, watch DVDs on the subject and speak to older and happily married couples, attend seminars, etc. Realize the pitfalls of not remedying the situation as early as possible and save your marriage.

Say ‘I’m sorry:’ Once you realize just where you went wrong, the next natural step for you is to apologize to your spouse. If your spouse finds you genuinely sorry, he or she will accept your apology and give your marriage another chance.

Take full responsibility: Now, accept full responsibility for all your actions. Don’t blame your actions on a stressful job, your demanding friends or anything else. Try and empathize with your spouse and become aware of your own behavior and thought process. This will make you less critical of your spouse and more loving. Only when you accept total responsibility can there be a change in your stormy relations.

Take remedial action: You’ve regretted your past behavior, so now it’s time to show how sorry you are and remedy the situation. To avoid divorce, let your spouse know just how you intend going about this and together reach a compromise on your areas of trouble.

Be thoughtful and loving: Whether you have a male or a female spouse, every married partner wants to feel loved and longed for. So, talk love, be thoughtful towards your spouse and help with household work and demonstrate your love. Your man needs special attention, so admire and respect him. Listen to him and think carefully about his opinions.

Include your spouse in your life: Once again, put the magic back in your relationship by making time for your spouse. Dine together, go for walks and discuss your relationship freely and frankly—in fact, do whatever it takes to avoid divorce.
