Vacuum-cleaning the whole house often (specially under furniture, behind doors, etc) and throwing away the bag each time will help a ton. Daily vacuum-cleaning will at least rid the home of 94% of live adult fleas. This counts for all the carpets and floors make sure you vacuum everything. Then seal the vacuum cleaner bag in another plastic bag to make sure that no fleas can get out and place that bag in your trash can outside. You will need to repeat this process regularly so that you can keep the fleas out of your home for good.
Put Borax and salt into your vacuum cleaner, this will help to get rid of any possible flea eggs that you have collected during vacuuming your house. This is a safe and cheap way to control the fleas in your house. Salt and borax are inexpensive and safe around your kids and your pets. Mix the salt and borax into a 50 - 50 mixture.
Plant the herb, ' Pennyroyal ', in your household or near a doghouse, it will repel fleas. You may also wish to grow and maintain the herb in your home or apartment.
Cedar is one of nature's insect repellents and used for centuries, especially on clothes. Lately, it's getting more popular as a method to keep fleas away from pets. The popularity has increased because some chemical companies that develop sprays and such to treat fleas on cats and dogs have receive negative reviews in many pet journals as shortening the lives of dogs and cats.
When fleas notice the smell of Cedar, they instinctively recognize that cedar isn't a secure environment for their eggs and they simply leave it. Put a piece of Cedar Wood in the corner of rooms, below furniture and under a pets bed area will keep the fleas away. Next, put some Cedar Chips in your house or flats, behind the doors, etc, as it will act like a barrier to hold fleas away.
Eucalyptus leafage also work really well for holding fleas at bay. For some reason, fleas do not like the smell. Eucalyptus leaves can be purchased online or at many natural health food shops and even at some of the bigger craft shops. There are some benefits to applying eucalyptus as a flea treatment, such as getting rid of any side effects that can come with using other toxic chemical substances.
Tansy is already in use for healing functions in the last decade, but it's also great as a flea repellant. Fleas do not like the scent of tansy. Hang tansy flowers in your room or place where you have a flea problem. You could also hang several by doors and windows, make sure to hang them high enough that your pets can't consume them. They are deadly to animals if consumed. You also can rub the flower and put it on your dogs or cats coat to act as a repellant. Tansy flowers can be grown in all area, but it is better to grow them in areas away from other plants to stop them from over running your main gardens. You must cut off the dead tansy flowers so they do not produce seeds.
