People who suffer from joint inflammation are very familiar with the pain associated with it. Simply put, joint inflammation is ususally the basis of joint pain. If someone wants to find relief, they need to treat the cause. Things like prescription drugs and over the counter medications are treating the symptoms.
First, let's look at the swelling and pain. We can relax the joints and ease the pressure by using certain types of massage and acupuncture. Try to have a regular exercise program such as swimming or yoga. Evaluate how you use your furniture. Is the way you sit or sleep putting stress on a joint?
Next, we will address joint inflammation, starting with your diet. Have lots of fresh vegetables and fruits. Get more sulfur-containing foods on the dinner plate. These could include eggs, dark greens and onions. Sulfur helps repair bones, cartilage and connective tissue. Do your best to avoid the excess fat you get from dairy products and red meat.
What will this accomplish?
There are several things the above suggestions are trying to do but the most important one is getting the immune system in balance.
A healthy immune system has a roughly equal amount of two different families of essential fatty acids - omega 3s and omega 6s. The word essential means that the body can not make them. This means both omega 3s and 6s have to be gotten through the diet.
For most of us, we get plenty of omega 6s through vegetable oils, processed foods, salad dressings and various nuts and grains. The largest quantities of omega 3s come from cold water fatty fish, dark greens and animals raised on green vegetation - not grains.
I think you see the problem. Our diets are way out of balance which causes a severe omega 3 deficiency in about 90% of us.
This is why the fish oil supplement industry has grown so much the past ten years. The omega 3s in fish oil are called DHA and EPA. Look at the food labels. They are being put in bread, baby formula, cereal, dairy products and even baked goods.
How does this affect joint inflammation?
When the immune system is overloaded with omega 6s, the body will over respond to a disease or even just a cut. This means we overproduce white blood cells, platelets and assorted chemicals. They have no place go so the area they are in expands and causes pressure. If it happens in the joints, we can get arthritis.
Actually, inflammation can negatively effect every part of us, including the heart and brain. We literally can get depressed, walk around on creaky knees and have a heart attack - all from two similar causes - a bad diet and a nutritional deficiency.
There are various vitamins, minerals, amino acids and herbs that are useful in fighting joint inflammation but the omega 3s in fish oil are probably your most severe need.
A few final thoughts. There is no single cure but if you do not attack the root causes of a disease, it will never get much better. Anyone who has a typical Western diet would be shocked to find out how imbalanced their bodies are.
Occasional fish at dinner or some DHA enriched bread or milk will not work. Joint inflammation demands daily supplementation in substantial doses. This is why selecting the right product is important.
Keep in mind this time schedule. The immune system needs about 90-to-180 days of supplements to get back in balance. This should be your next area of research.
