We live in a fitness-crazed society where everyday more and more individuals are finding ways and the latest trends for fitness and weight training. Looking good through weight loss and muscle gain is always the goal for most fitness buffs. And one way to achieve this is through enrolling in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Yes it is a martial art that is known for teaching grappling and throwing techniques but is also proven to be effective in fitness and weight training. That’s why you don’t see a jiu-jitsu practitioner with lose fats and overweight body.

How is Brazilian jiu-jitsu better from gym exercises? Well for one, this martial art focuses on movements that are multi-directional. It would require the use of muscles in different and many planes of motion. Most gym exercises focuses with one or two muscle group at a time but with jiu-jitsu, the muscles are almost exercised all at the same time. Plus you have the added benefit of learning how to defend yourself or your loved ones in times of danger. Exercising in the gym can make your body buff but not teach you important moves and techniques to defend yourself.

Functional fitness is another concentration of Brazilian jiu-jitsu. The very nature of this martial art as an exercise revolves around the development of the heart and muscle group since these muscle groups plays a vital role to be a good jiu-jitsu artist. What’s best is that it conditions your body neither to the right size as you will not get too bulky nor to skinny. This is good for most women who do not want the after effect of bodybuilding which causes a bulky body. Not everybody finds a bulky and overly accentuated muscular body beautiful or attractive.

This martial art also aims to increase the flexibility of its practitioners. One needs to be flexible in the legs and the core area to excel in this sport. There are some positions and movements that would really require a flexible body. for examples the Triangle Chokes which is a famous Brazilian jiu-jitsu move requires the legs to be flexible. And constant practice of this move would increase the legs flexibility. Some moves like the guard also require twisting motions which targets the flexibility of the body’s core. Since flexibility is paramount for this sport, the end result is for practitioners to have a flexible and beautiful body.

Because of the fitness and weight training benefits of Brazilian jiu-jitsu more and more high end gyms are offering classes for this martial art. It’s a good way to give it a try and if you found it to be enjoyable and beneficial then enrolling in a martial arts gym that focuses in Brazilian jiu-jitsu is much better as they would teach you the real thing and not just workout routines choreographed for people who workout in a gym. Give it a try and you will find that you will be able to achieve a rock hard and beautifully shaped body in a few amount of time.
