There are two ways to use images to build site traffic - the right way and the wrong way. Here are several more details around both!
The Wrong Way To Use Images For Traffic
You could, if you wish and are still following search engine optimisation techniques that went out years ago, stuff the ALT attribute of the images on your site with keywords that you want the search engines to send your more traffic for.
Whilst this out dated method may still look good, it only does not work any more and at worst, it might alert the search engines to your attempts to spam them and do you more harm than good.
The Correct Ways To Use Images For Traffic
There are 2 ways to use images correctly - the first through directly attracting traffic and the second through creating images that people will share. I'll deal with the second first!
Creating images to share - this is lots harder to do and takes a load of effort and skill, but it involves creating images, cartoons and other graphics that really impress people and make them want to share what they have found. Possibly it is a very funny and topical cartoon that plenty of people will like and you add a 'send to a friend' link so that visitors might quickly email others to tell them to call in. A good way to draw in visitors through social marketing, but very difficult to do!
Search engine traffic - the reason why search engines such as Google and Yahoo penalise ALT stuffing and wants everyone to use the ALT and TITLE attributes correctly is that using these correctly really does assist the search engine in its creation of the their images database. So, work with them, not against them.
To every image on your site include an ALT that does describe the image. "A picture of celebrity X shopping in Spar" might just get you several web site traffic for people searching on that celebrity, if that is what the subject of the image is. But remember to work with the search engines! So do be sure that the description is accurate, but to the point.
There is also some belief that there is extra weight in putting a title under the photograph in bold, describing again the image. If this is picture is highly relevant to your web site then you might get more site visitors. Even if the image is off topic it should help improve your general traffic levels.
This method of driving new search engine visitors to your web site through the image searches does not need to be that difficult. Especially with a website, just remember to add the ALT field with every new image. The downside is that probably the traffic are not always relevant to what your web site is offering, but choose your images and descriptions carefully and a percentage will be relevant and may even return loads of times over.
So, that is the correct way and the incorrect way to use images to build web site visitors. Either create a masterpiece or use the ALT field correctly and work with the search engines.
