Originally established as shields between the household and the fireplace, fire place screens are forms of home furniture the primordial function of which is to limit or reduce the discomfort of excessive heat caused by log fires. These had flat shaped panels standing on attached feet. Some had adjustable shield-shaped panels mounted on tripod table legs.

In the present times, these screens have gradually developed some decorative purpose. Still maintaining its primordial functions nonetheless, these screens have shields of sheet metal, glass, or wire mesh that can be placed in front of a fireplace opening to protect the room from open flames and flying sparks that can be produced therein. These can be used to cover the fire place when nothing is burning inside it.

Fire place screens have different styles and different looks. There are screens that have flat, single panels. The single panel fireplace screens fit up against a fireplace. It can instantly update the look of your hearth. Likewise, there are arch-topped fireplace screens for a stylish look for the hearth.

Mostly picked out of these styles are the traditional brass fire screens and black fire screens. But experts on interior designs and even home owners are starting to prefer using screens with the latest and most recent types of finishes. Satin nickel screens, brushed steel screens, and stainless steel screens, plus a couple more all project a fresh look.

There are folding panel screens. But take note that the fire screen should be at least ten to twelve inches wider than the opening of the fire place. This is to allow enough fold in the screen so that it does not tip over. And the height of the screen must be at least one to three inches taller than the opening. Also there are single panel screens. Also note that the single panel screen should overlap the opening of the fire place by at least one to two inches on all sides for ample protection against flying fire sparks.

With fire place screens, you can be sure that your home is safe and sound. These are essential security means to protect your home against the hostilities of fire.
