Here’s a few easy tips for making your day at the flea market even more enjoyable.
As a rule flea markets are outdoors so you may wish some sunscreen, a hat and some shades. A cool drink tucked away in the bottom of your bag is also a great plan. Personally, I take a shopping cart so I can carry my new found goodies around with no difficulty. There are some very reasonably priced carts that fold up and easily fit into the trunk of your car.
I also make certain I wear a comfortable pair of walking shoes so I won’t have to finish my day early due to tired feet.
Another great tip is to walk to the very end of the vendor’s stalls and work your way back towards the entry. This way you will have the heaviest load from stuff you have purchased when you are nearest your car. Generally folks start at the entrance of the flea market so if you begin at the rear you will be likely to spot many bargain priced odds and ends before too many other people do.
Additionally, because it is perfectly acceptable to barter with the merchant, I typically take some small change in my purse so I don’t have to drag out large notes during the haggling. An extra thing to consider is that you are more apt to get a better price later in the day when the vendor is eager to increase his overall earnings for the day. By the end of the day though most sellers are very prepared to reduce the prices on the items they have remaining. They definitely don’t want to have to bundle up any more stuff at the end of the day than they absolutely have to. The down side to this tactic is by going to a flea market first thing in the morning you are likely to be able to take advantage of the selection before everybody else has.
There are various methods to reach a deal on the price of any given item. You can ask the seller what the lowest price is that they will take for a given item. You can also offer to pay a certain price and see if they will take you up on the offer. Alternatively, if you want to offer $10 then have the correct money in your hand for them to see. Seeing the cash will often influence them to accept your offer. Be fair with the vendor but don’t forget that you may also find the exact same item in the next isle even cheaper.
So good luck, have fun and happy bargain hunting!
