Though aromatherapy in one type or another was been around for thousands of years it wasn't until the 19th century that scientists in Europe began researching the effects of essential oils on bacteria in humans.
It wasn't till the 20th century that the word aromatherapy was 1st used; it had been coined in 1937 by French cosmetic scientist Rene-Maurice Gattefosse. His analysis found that the volatile extracts distilled from sure plants had a profound impact on the skin. Although his analysis was confined to cosmetic uses of essential oils, he soon realised that many had antiseptic and painkilling properties, his hand was severely burned during a laboratory explosion he immediately plunged his hand into the nearest liquid that happened to be lavender oil. He was impressed by the actual fact that the pain immediately subsided and it healed well with no sign of infection or scarring. A good deal of interest in aromatherapy was kindled in France as a result of of Gattefosse's work. Not solely were oils found to heal skin, but additionally strengthen the body's immune system.
In 1937 Gattefosse wrote a book called Aromatherapie: Les Huiles essentielles hormones vegetales that was translated into English and renamed Gattefosse's Aromatherapy.
Dr Jean Valnet is said to have contributed most to the medical assessment and acceptance of aromatherapy. He used essential oils to treat the injuries of soldiers throughout the second world war, he's credited with discovering the synergy of oils, by treating psychiatric patients with essential oils. These folks suffered from facet effects of drugs given to treat their depression and hallucinations. They were gradually started medication and treated with essential oils, each externally with baths and rubs and internally by mouth or injection. The treatment was given beside herbal remedies and diet. Each physical and mental symptoms were relieved, sometimes among days of being started out the drugs.
Within the 1950's Austrian born cosmetologist Marquerite Maury introduced the concept of combining essential oils with massage. She most well-liked to dilute essential oils in vegetable oil and massaging it into the skin. She developed a special massage technique of applying the oils along the nerve centres of the spine. Although her treatments were for beauty therapy she had discovered an important key to healing.
However, it was British aromatherapist, Robert Tisserand's book 'The Art of Aromatherapy' printed in 1977 that, was one of the first books in English on the subject that has sparked the best interest in the therapeutic properties of essential oils and aromatherapy in general that we have a tendency to now have today.
