Lately, it has been increasingly common to see omega 3 fish oil products that use krill as a source. Health conscious people have always known of the high prices but lately they are beginning to ask what are the benefits of krill oil supplement?
This is a quote from one of the more popular supplement makers:
"Krill and Fish Oil both contain DHA and EPA. However, unlike fish, they are near the bottom of the food chain, so they don't contain harmful heavy metals. Krill oil also contains powerful antioxidants, astaxanthin and vitamins. The unique structure also makes it much more absorbable by the body and thus more effective. Therefore, it is the superior choice."
Everything in that quote about the benefits of krill oil supplement is true if you are comparing it to mediocre fish products. Here is what they did not tell you:
1] Recently, the National Geographic estimated the overall levels in the Antarctic are down 80% since the early 1970s. This is troubling since it is the chief food for thousands of whales, birds and other fish.
Fish is caught for food. The oil used in supplements is a by product. It has no negative environmental impact.
2] The astaxanthin they mentioned is a powerful antioxidant but there is only about 0.3mg per capsule in most products. At these small levels it acts as a preservative, not a nutrient. Some fish products add about 2-to-3mg per capsule, which is usually sourced from readily abundant algae - not krill . In other words, you get a lot more astaxanthin without any environmental damage.
3] It is true that the lower in the food chain you go, the fewer contaminants. Sharks can be as dangerous on the dinner table as in the water. However, the better processed fish supplements have as few, if not fewer toxins, than anything else out there. My product publishes independent lab reports on their website to back up their claims.
4] Another of the claimed benefits of krill oil supplements is that it is more "absorbable by the body." Once again, only when compared to mediocre products. They usually fail to mention that the combined DHA and EPA levels are 5-6 times less than a comparable fish source.
5] The cost. As I mentioned earlier, the nutrient content is much less. For this, it will cost about 33% more per capsule.
It is difficult to find any real benefits of krill oil supplement. They have fewer omega 3s, cost more, have no environmental advantage and do not absorb any better. My website can help you find quality alternatives.
