This female painter was eight years old when she got her first dog. The small Boston terrier died within a year, but not before it had made a lasting impression on the young girl. Nowadays, noble pets have a significant role in her life. An accomplished painter is what she is and her specialty is dog portraits.
What she did was read every dog book and magazine she could find as she spent a number of Sunday afternoons in the public library. You can say that she would have loved showing dogs in trials and dog shows as a professional dog handler. She was able to go to various dog shows as she spent her free time there drawing and sketching the animals at 13. Making dog portraits and using oils for painting were things she was introduced to by a friend at 16.
Yes she was able to paint abstracts, landscapes, sea scapes, and other subjects rather well but she decided to select this specialty of hers. The reason why she felt that she made the right decision was the fact that she had made and sold numerous dog portraits early on. What she painted in the beginning were the dogs belonging to the members of the family. There was a local pet shop that put up a notice about her paintings and they also displayed a picture she made of their Boston terrier.
Two paintings are what she credits for a large measure of her progress. One is the painting she did of charlie black, the beguiling little mongrel the animal humane association restored to health and adopted as a mascot. The other painting was of the handsome champion phantom of the ice flue, the Alaskan malamute.
It is the head and expression that make the dog considering a Labrador retriever. Taking a black dog into consideration, it is hard to photograph one and even harder to paint it. There was a painting she made of the statue of a jacket found in Tutankhamen's tomb which was unusual. Appropriate Egyptian symbols were painted in the background.
Sometimes, people ask her to make portraits of horses or other kinds of pets. She is assisted by her husband tangibly and psychologically. He made the specially designed table that holds her paints and brushes. She made and stained the specially crafted easels and display stands on which she shows her work. Her largest portrait ever was a three by four foot portrait of a Labrador.
It is easier to paint smoother dogs than the longer coated ones. No dog is ever posed. There will never be a dog that holds its head just right. For an hour, she observes the animal carefully and from this she is able to remember its sheen, the color of its coat, its typical stance, and the evident personality or character traits it may have. Recording these traits onto a canvas is a skill of hers that many people agree upon.
The owners provide the snapshots she uses. She can also take the picture herself and blow it up on the screen if the owner cannot provide her with one. I paint for the people, I let them choose the background and things like that. Sometimes, one chooses sceneries and then others choose plain ones. A portrait a month is what she works on considering family commitments. Apart from catching up with housework, she takes vacations every now and then.
