The children are heading back to school now, which means a strain on mom and dad's wallets. Between book rental, supplies, and new clothes and shoes, back to school time is a time for major spending, second only to the holiday season for most parents. Whether your son or daughter is heading to elementary school, high school, or college, there are several ways that you can save money by shopping online.

First, consider the time that you spend going from store to store looking for specific clothes and supplies. Especially if you start your back to school shopping late, you may end up having to visit multiple places to get what you need.
Cut out the money that you are wasting on gas by making your purchases online and getting free or low cost shipping.

Second, look for lower prices on textbooks online than you could find in your college textbook store. You may find slightly used or deeply discounted copies of the exact same books online. Be careful, though, to ensure that you are getting the correct editions because many college textbooks are updated every year or every couple of years.

Third, look for deal sites that offer you both coupons and cash back shopping. Not only will you save money on the purchase itself (usually more than the savings in-store), but you will also be earning money back to spend later (which you know you will need next semester). Many coupon and deal sites will give you options for taking a percentage off, a dollar amount off, Buy One Get One, or free gift with purchase plus combine it with some kind of free or flat rate shipping offer.
Lastly, let your fingers do the comparison shopping for you. On big ticket items in particular (like laptops, college dorm furnishings, and quality shoes), you can compare online prices across several stores to be sure that you are getting the best deal possible.

Although shopping online does not alleviate the strain of back to school shopping altogether, it can certainly help minimize it. Once you start shopping online for your back to school needs, you will not want to step foot in a store for them again.
