A story that began as storage keeper of computer – computer hard drives have today with speed and performance added the dimension of portability. Yes this is the story of hard disk drive. Commonly referred to as HDD in the technical circuit, it is the main storage centre in the computer. It is larger and faster than the other storage devices like PD/CD/DVD.

When need changes and when they become a demand, then the by-product is evolution. Just sitting inside the computer and doing the storage job was not enough; you need to go out and reach out to the new needs cropping up. Thus, the device external hard drive was born; so what remained inside the computer was called the internal hard drive and what could go about places and store came to be known as external hard drive. So now we have two types of computer hard drives: internal and external.

That was the ABC on computer hard drive, HDD. Today HDD is used in devices using data such as desktop computers, camcorder, supercomputer and mainframes. You know something? There are hundreds of them in built in the supercomputer and the mainframe.

The performance of the computer depends on the speed of the hard drive, after all that’s what affects the speed of the computer when it boots up and loads the programs. In doing so, there are many programs that need to be run simultaneously without affecting the speed or performance, so here is where you need your computer hard drive to be good with multitasking.

The serial interface passes the data from the HDD to the computer; to get this done faster several serial interfaces are deployed. Today HDD operates on high-speed serial interfaces: Serial ATA (SATA or Serial Advanced Technology Attachment) or Serial attached SCSI (SAS) (Small Computer Serial Interface, Serial attached).

One question: Who needs this speed, this performance? Ok if we are out of the Flintstones’ world then yes computer gaming, sound, video, graphics, and huge database(s) to run these behemoth tasks, do need a performer not a doer.

The computer hard drives shelf has come up with range of products to suit your needs. It depends whether the buyer is a gamer, sound artist, media professional or a videographer.

If Moses had to come up with the latest hard drives what would it look like?
Media buffs and gamers get your ears and eyes closer as you read this:

Internal Hard Drive:
• The Western Digital Caviar Black WD5001AALS 500GB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" internal hard drive,

• Western Digital VelociRaptor 300GB 3.5? SATA 3.0Gb/s Internal Hard Drive
WD VelociRaptor, the newest member of the class of 10,000 RPM SATA hard drives, combines a SATA 3 Gb/s interface and 16 MB cache, to deliver performance that’s up to 35% faster than its speedy older brother. It’s the Usain Bolt in the HDD technology.
External Hard Drive:
• Seagate FreeAgent Go Special Edition 500GB 2.5? Black Chrome External Hard Drive with Dock

It goes without saying that what Moses got along and what are your HDD needs will answer your choice of HDD. So get your checklist and do the math.
