The first tip I want to give you is be persistent. It is important to be persistent when starting a forum. Patience is important also. This project will take time, do not expect results immediately. A forum gains traffic the longer it is running. Traffic takes time to build, so your online forum will need time. Your chances of success are better the longer your forum is online.
You should be interested in the topic you pick for your forum. If you are not interested in the subject matter you are writing then the content for your forum will be harder to come by. You will probably become quite bored will writing about an uninteresting subject. You will also not want to be online very long if you are working on something boring.
Next you will want to find some people, like maybe family, or friends who share this interest with you. If you can get a few of your friends or relatives to talk on your forum a few times a day that will help to create content. This will greatly improve your chances of having other people check out your forum. Without a dedicated group of uses, the site will never grow.
After you have established a small community of active users, it is time to try to expand. You can do this by asking friends to have their friends and relatives check out your forum. You do not want to start spamming your URL on forums and blogs just yet. You will want to have about 40 or 50 members before the advertising starts. When new people come to your forum, you will want them to see a tightly knit community of friends. Starting out is hard so do not over do it. Do not spend too much time on the site posting threads and talking to your self. Users can see through this. You also do not want to have too many forums with no users. If all of your forums are empty then it just makes the site look even less active. Start with a small number of forums and try to get at least 5 post a day.
Starting a forum takes work and patience but it pays off in the end. The most important thing to remember is that you should have fun. Build a fun, friendly environment for your users to discuss things. Your main goal should be to keep your users happy.
