Should You Look For A Fish Oil Sale or Be More Careful

A fish oil sale in a health food store is as normal as a sale on coffee. Common "discounts" are as high as fifty to sixty per cent. Do you ever wonder how this is possible? Do you think that they are crazy? The real question is how gullible do they think consumers are?
We all want to save money. Remember when supermarkets were selling "generic" brands at reduced prices. That was popular for a while but that marketing campaign eventually died out due to lack of buyers. A fish oil sale is the new generic.
However, in this case, your body will be able to tell the difference between the cheap variety and quality supplements. On the other hand, high priced products are not always what is needed either.
Let us revisit why people buy fish oil in the first place. It has the two essential fatty acids that we want - DHA and EPA. By essential, nutritionists mean that the body can not make them.
I raise this point because if you live in the West, the odds are 9-to-1 that you have an omega 3 deficiency. Dr. Joseph Hibbeln, of the National Institute of Health, said: "In the last century, [Western] diets have radically changed and we eat grossly fewer omega-3 fatty acids now." This improper diet causes or aggravates depression, ADD, heart problems, swollen joints, skin diseases and eye problems.
Consumers are becoming smarter. They are at least somewhat aware that the only way to get enough omega 3s is to eat a lot of seafood. Unfortunately, the FDA, AHA and others are not thrilled with that plan.
They are concerned, with good reason, about the ocean toxins that the fish absorb. Other alternatives such as grass fed beef, walnuts or flax or either inefficient or not that available. The choice seems to be: nutrition or health. This is why the supplement market is growing so fast. However, a fish oil sale is probably not that healthy or nutritious either.
It is not easy to develop a pollutant free product that is loaded in omega 3s. The company must be committed to quality and not price points. Next is a brief summary of some shortcuts that are used by price point manufacturers:
1] The catch from fishing fleets usually sells at different prices depending on the fish, freshness and market at the time. A really easy way to cut costs is to buy stuff no one else wants - high on rancidity, low on omega 3s.
2] A very simple way to disguise the product is to wrap an enteric coating around it. This means you can not smell or taste the oil. There really is no other reason to do this. Enteric coatings are needed to get certain nutrients like amino acids to the small intestine. Fish oil is absorbed in the stomach.
3] Bad press has caused some of the fish oil sale companies to at least make an effort at separating out some of the ocean toxins. They then use all sorts of chemical additives to make the oil processing cheaper. Hexane [petrochemical], talc [crushed rock] and titanium dioxide [paint thinner] are my personnel favorites.
It is very possible that these types of products can actually hurt your health. A fish oil sale is no bargain. I use a supplement that costs $16-$18/month. They also do very little marketing.
