Before you start using your new computer and going online to meet, greet, or surf various websites, there are 7 steps you need to follow.

1.You Need to Create your Recovery Disks

Most manufacturers are cutting back and they no longer provide recovery disks. In most cases, you will need to create your own. Recovery disks allow you to re-install your operating system when things go wrong. An operating system is not without flaws and it can get attacked by viruses and spyware (if not protected). By having recovery disks on hand, you’ll be protected if your hard disk crashes or you experience a computer virus.

With a recovery disks, you can get back on track quickly. Before you create your own, check if any recovery disks came with your system. If so, keep them well and use them because they will definitely come in handy. Make a second copy in case you damage the originals.

2.You Need To Install Internet Security Software

Your security software should have the following:

•A firewall - This is your initial line of defense against potential threats. You can compare this to a protective steel door on a home that can keep intruders out.

•Anti-spyware - This is an application that will detect spyware. The files considered as spyware will not wreck or damage your computer and will steal important data if allowed.

•Anti-virus and Anti-malware- This is what keeps the viruses away. You need to keep this updated so it will recognize bad files or bad websites.

If you would rather use another software, be sure to uninstall the default first to avoid any conflicts.

3.Uninstall Software

In order to get the best performance out of your new computer, uninstall unnecessary software in your computer. If you don’t you will most likely experience unnecessary consequences of conflict and freezes. To uninstall software properly, go to Start >Control Panel >Add/Remove Programs or Programs depending on which versions of Windows you are using. A list will appear indicated which software you have installed. Scroll down to the program you want to remove, and click on Remove or Uninstall.

If you want, remove programs that you don’t need like trial games, internet links, toolbars, and photo applications. If you want to change security software, then remove it and make sure you have the replacement installation CD on hand.

4.Consider A Different Web Browser

A web browser is like your portal to the cyber world. When you buy a computer, it usually comes with a default web browser.

You may need the default browser to run updates, so leave it on. However if you find it too slow or buggy, download a new one. Try a few while you are at it, it may just make you online experience more enjoyable. You could save energy with a different web browser. You could also make your entire computer system more secure.

The different web browsers that are now being touted as the best are Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, Safari and my current favorite is Google Chrome.

5.Update All Software

Always obtain updates for your software and hardware. Software comes with a set of instructions and commands that allow it to interact with the rest of the software or hardware. The updates will install newer, relevant files so your software will continue to work perfectly.

Another reason why updates are essential is that they plug loopholes. Thus, updates contain security measures to help avoid infiltration through loopholes.

6.Create A Backup

The back-up is your safety net in case something goes wrong. It will save you a lot of time, effort, and money and won’t take as long as you think. Of course, regularly back-up your files, preferably on an external drive, flash drive or DVD.

7.Create Your Password

You have to have a password as an added security. It keeps children away and possible mishaps if they play on your keyboard. It will also protect your computer files from intruders and busybodies if you work in an office.

By following these 7 steps done, your new computer should work perfectly and be protected for a very long time to come.
