Even if you haven't ever grown a single plant in your life, you can learn to be a great organic gardener if you're willing to put in the time and effort.
If you are a beginner, the tomato plant is one of the best plants to start with. Tomato plants are relatively easy to plant and take care of. You can grow them almost anywhere. You can grow tomatoes in almost every single type of garden. You can even grow them in their own containers. Most tomato plants don't require much attention. These make great first plants because once they have matured and their blossoms are ripe you can eat them! You can literally eat the fruits of your labor (pardon the pun) when you grow tomatoes in your garden.
Using mulch in your garden is a great way to get nutrients into the soil and keep pests away from your garden. Mulch is a great anti-weed addition to any garden. Many gardeners use mulch to cut down on the amount of maintenance they have to do and because it keeps their gardens healthy. The fact is that there are a lot of reasons why mulch is so popular.
Mulch helps regulate your soil's temperature and keeps the soil moist for a long time. One of the biggest reasons that mulch is popular is that it is very cheap and far less expensive than "regular" fertilizers. Mulch is just as effective but is more affordable.
As a gardener, you need to make friends with bees. You might not be thrilled to have them around your person, but bees are a godsend to a garden! Bees spread pollen around, which your garden needs if it is going to grow. Your plants need pollen to help them bloom. This means that you need to get over your fear of bees. Making your garden friendly for bees is also a good idea.
Slugs and snails are pretty much the most irritating pests in a garden. You should get over your squeamishness as soon as possible. These creepy slimy creatures love gardens and are good at hiding so even though you might develop a way of dealing with most of them you probably won't get them all. You'll just have to remove them one by one-get used to the idea now.
Some snail and slug remedies involve placing jars of beer around your garden or running copper wire along the length of your garden plot. You can buy traps and food to try to keep them away from your plants but the truth is that you will have to learn to face them.
The best way to combat plant eating pests is to let some ladybugs take up residence in your garden. The ladybugs are great for your garden because they eat the pests that you were thinking about attacking with pesticides. Pest eaters like ladybugs are fantastic for gardens. Pest eaters like ladybugs are more environmentally friendly than the alternative. You won't ingest them by accident. They help you keep the pests away from your garden!
Composting is a great way to keep your garden healthy. Compost can be made at home without having to make any special purchases.
Starting your own compost pile is simple. Compost piles can be made from everything from paper to caged pet bedding to food scraps (plant based)-even used tea bags and egg shells and coffee grounds can be added to your compost pile. Pretty much the only thing you can't put into a compost pile is meat. You will eventually build a big pile of homemade fertilizer for your garden.
If you can find the right tips, though, beginning your first organic garden won't feel so intimidating. In fact, if you put in enough effort, you could have a thriving organic garden before you know what has happened!
