Doctors used to think their was no way to predict who would get diabetes. It was thought that there was no way to keep someone from developing this disease. But as more people were diagnosed, doctors noticed that those with certain personality traits and genetic traits were a larger percentage of their diabetic patients. We have since learned a great deal about diabetes and what causes it. Thankfully, some causes of diabetes are things you can control. Here are some factors that cause diabetes, some you can control, others you can't.
Stop drinking if you drink often! A leading cause of diabetes is excessive drinking, especially in older men. Alcohol contains a lot of fats and empty calories that affect all the different parts of your body. More than just your liver is affected. Cholesterol levels can be raised as well. Drinking heavily over long periods of time can cause high blood pressure and also diabetes. Drinking wine a couple times a week won't hurt you. It can be very harmful to spend a few hours drinking every night.
Treatment should be sought if you have a problem with heavy drinking.
Do you excercise or move around? Scientists have recently discovered that leading a sedentary lifestyle can contribute heavily to whether or not a person develops diabetes. Do you know what that means? It means that you need to get up and move around! You need to do at least thirty minutes of excercise per day. This exercise does not need to be intense. Even a short brisk walk around the neighborhood in the evening can help battle diabetes. Exercise or lack thereof is the most simple action you can take to fight diabetes. Why are you still sitting there? Get a move on! Go for a walk.
Do you consume a lot of fatty foods? Stop now! Diets that consist of a high fat content are a big cause for diabetes. This is one of a great many reasons your physician will tell you to rid yourself of the fatty foods in your diet.
Fatty food is a horrible choice, no matter how you look at it. It can bestow weight gain, high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels and now we're aware that it can also cause diabetes. Snacking every once in awhile won't cause the disease. Eating poor quality meals on a regular basis, however, could be the major difference between being healthy and becoming a diabetic. In most cases, diabetes can be avoided. Since type 1 diabetes is determined more by genetics and ethnicity, it is harder to avoid. The factors that determine type 2 diabetes are more environmental and can be controlled. Be upfront with your doctor regarding your risk factors for developing either form of this disease. They will know the best way for you to prevent developing this condition.
