At any given time of any marriage there is always a time of assessment. This is simply a method where either one or both of the partners in a marriage goes over the pros and cons of the marriage and sometimes the pros outweigh the cons, sometimes it is vice versa. It is the vice versa that is the sign of trouble.

Usually you know that it is in trouble if the following things are experienced:

• Abusive relationship (physical, emotional, monetary, verbal, mental)

Abuse actually breaks a marriage contract, literally. Marriage is based on love and an equal partnership in everything and an abusive relationship is not an equal partnership. If there is abuse, then the abuser broke the contract and it is best that when you do reach this conclusion, to get out of the marriage, even if just to save your life.

• Lack of communication or simply no communication whatsoever

When partners stop talking to one another, or one does not talk to the other despite attempts, then something is definitely wrong. But this does not necessary mean the marriage is in trouble, it can simply mean that the partner is having trouble and it is up to you to break through the walls and make sure that communication is re-established before it is too late.

• There is another person involved (interfering mother-in-law, interfering friends)

The mother-in-law factor is one of the most common causes of a marriage breaking up. The mother is the mother; unfortunately they can get too interfering that if the child of that mother is not willing to stand up for the marriage, then it will successfully break it up. The only way to deal with interferences of mother-in-laws and friends is to simply put a stop to it, issue an ultimatum for the sake of the marriage. Unwillingness to make the ultimatum will be seen by the partner that there was no real commitment made.
