Acid reflux, as far as most diseases and disorders go, is fairly minor. By making a few lifestyle changes, acid reflux is most often controllable. Some people are even able to forget that they have this disorder. Of course, when you do experience an attack it can be a little scary. If you know what the major causes of acid reflux are it may help lessen that fear. If you know what can cause an attack, you will know how to avoid them. You have control over most causes of this disorder although there are some that are purely medical. Use the following to identify and control the major causes of acid reflux in your life.

Is snacking late at night something you frequently do? You've probably heard that this is a bad habit. Eating snacks right before bedtime is almost universally condemned by health and medical experts. Even kids are told this by their parents and teachers. They were all telling you the truth! If you eat very close to the time you lay down to go to sleep, you could experience an acid reflux attack.

This has to do with the position of your body when you are sleeping, which can cause your stomach acid to move around. Your body should have an hour or two to digest your food before you go to sleep. You have to pay attention to how your body works.

Is exercise a part of your regular routine? If you don't get enough exercise you are more prone to acid reflux attacks but careful not to do certain activities too strenuously. Not exercising hampers the body's ability to function properly. This sluggishness means your body is not processing the acid in your stomach properly, leading to an attack of acid reflux. This is why it is important to get a little exercise every day. Something as simple as a brisk walk is enough.

Acid reflux can even be caused by certain exercises.

In most cases, the kind of exercise that produces the symptoms are those that work the abdominal wall. If you do a strenuous exercise that causes enough tension in the stomach to cause stomach acid to go upwards, into your esophagus, an attack can occur. Don't use this as an excuse to quit your exercise program! This just means that you will need to lower the impact of your abdominal workout. You can also reduce problems by leaving more time between your meal and exercising. Your doctor or an exercise trainer may be able to give you more tips on how to exercise in ways to reduce the likelihood of triggering acid reflux symptoms. Acid reflux does not have to be difficult to avoid. If you can keep stress under control, eat right and make smart lifestyle decisions you can avoid the experience of heartburn or acid reflux. Talk to your doctor about what the major causes might be for acid reflux. Together you will figure out how best to change your lifestyle so that you won't experience the attacks anymore (or at least cut down on them considerably).
