Study Claims Phones and Technology Hampers Pupils Education
A newly released survey has claimed an increased use of phones and the net is undermining pupils ability to check and is responsible for poor grammar amongst many school children.
The report made by the Cranfield College of Management blames kids's use of mobile phones and the net for a fall in standards in pupils study, research and written communication skills.
The study found that ninety per cent of scholars used the net, that is double the proportion who did their research with books. It also finds 6 out of ten pupils have admitted to copying work from the net while not reading or understanding it, with a staggering twenty five% thinking this is an appropriate practice. English skills have also suffered with three in ten admit using text shortcuts in essay and coursework.
Andrew Kakabadse, of Cranfield School of Management, states: "Our analysis shows that technology obsession hinders spelling skills, implicitly encourages plagiarism, and disrupts classroom learning." in an even handed manner.
The Report has conjointly found that mobile phones notably had a negative effect upon school discipline seeing pupils often ignoring rules on mobile phones at School. One third of pupils admitted to using their mobiles at school, Andrew Kakabadse also said "Despite school policies limiting portable usage, students use the phone frequently, with the bulk making calls from the toilets. The mobile phone continues to be a main channel of social communication throughout the college day."
The report also shows extra patterns of behaviour that it find of concern; many pupils spend one or 2 hours per on a daily basis on social networking sites. Many pupils had access to a pc by 8, had used the web by 10 (with some doing thus as young as five), and used social networking sites between eleven and 13. One in 10 (9%) students have said they pay additional than six hours a day online.
One will should marvel with the tone of the report is that do the writers expect education, learning and society at large to stay static? As technology changes education will amendment and adapt as it does too many different stimuli. Several of these changes will be positive others will be negative. Circulated highlights of this report solely appear to target the negative aspects of this technological change.
