When first working on promoting a new website, it is important to set up effective marketing strategies. One of the most successful ways is to get backlinks working for you. This may seem a large job at first, but proven methods exist, and just require correct application and a proactive approach to the task.
Updating your blog everyday, or each time a new submission is added to your site, with a snapshot of what is on offer will have people getting interested in what you have to say. Think of the way TV producers end an episode of their Soap and apply it to your blogs. You want them to be exciting and informative, but ensure enough is left out to direct them to read the full article.
The above is a form of Link Baiting, which is perceived by some as spamming, it is not really. Using this technique, you pick a controversial subject or even something that will anger, (be sure to think carefully however), and write about it. The aim is to get people writing about your article, and either linking to that, or the full page on your site. People do like to get angry and complain. But be sure to pick your audiences carefully. There is nothing wrong with offending someone, just so long as it isn't abusive or disrespectful.
Very similar to both of these methods is getting involved on forums. Establish a reputation as a valuable and entertaining contributor, you will be able to embed a backlink in your signature, and use such selling techniques as, "I have written more about this", or "This is something I have considered for a while", and ask them to visit your pages. Be careful to again not cross the line of spamming, and target your musings responsibly.
Hopefully, your site idea will be strong a one, that people will want to visit. Working on this assumption, have a look at other sites along the same theme as you. Contact the webmasters of these, and inquire about setting up a link exchange with them. Don't attempt this until you are satisfied with the content of your site however, it won't be appreciated if they visit and there is nothing to show except templates and holding pages.
Finally, take a look at free web directories and submit your links to them. There are a host of these around, and are quite easy to find from on searches. It will take some time, but it will be worth trawling through them all and getting your site out there, particularly in the first instance.
