Do you want to learn how to sing? Who doesn’t, right? But how are we going to learn?
The first step is to listen to all kind of music. From pop songs, ballads, hip hop, and even rock music. Don’t limit yourself with a single genre; the more, the better singing styles you can learn.
Some of us would hum when we are in the shower or preparing dinner. Instinctively, when we hear familiar songs, we hum it silently in our head. Did you know that humming is one good example of a singing practice?
Well, nearly everyone of us likes to sing; in karaoke bars or in the confinement of our home. Some would consider enhancing their singing skills but some opt to ignore the skill that they have. Some say that we don’t need singing lessons when we are not interested in breaking in the music industry. But I would say that they are wrong about it.
First, you don’t have to aspire to be the next American Idol to have singing lessons. When you love to sing and you want to improve your singing abilities, no one can tell you to stop. Singing is a passion; to some, it fills the missing piece in them. If you will feel fulfilled and pleased when you sing, do it, not for others, but for yourself.
Decide on the kind of music that you would want to learn, of what you liked best. If you prefer rock music to ballad, or pop music to death metal, it’s your choice. You should be comfortable with your chosen music and your voice suits it also. For different kind of music, there are also different techniques to learn. And choosing the right voice coach is also important. There are different singing instructors, that is why, you have to choose the one that is more experienced and their specialty is your kind of music. Also, make mental notes of their behavior. Singing lessons should be enjoyed, not to be uncomfortable and awkward between you and the teacher. He or she should be patient and understanding, not cruel and insensitive with others.
Most of the professional artists today still hire vocal coaches. It is one way of preserving their voice and they still need their guidance in their careers. They don’t stop learning, never stopping even though, they had reached success. They sometimes don’t get contented of what they have; accepting that they are not perfect and still has rooms for improvements. And that is the trait they have that everyone who wants to sing better needs to know and take hold of.
And when you finally learn the basics in singing, don’t forget to take good care of your singing voice. One doesn’t abuse it if he wants to benefit from it. Avoid food and drinks that could harm it. Vices should be stopped, like smoking and going out at night. If you can’t avoid these, try to lessen it.
Remember, singing is a passion, live it, and love it.
