It may seem like a simple matter to put table lamps in living rooms and bedrooms to add some additional light and enhance the beauty of your home. But, before you rush out and purchase the first lamp you see, there are a number of factors that you should evaluate to help you choose the right lighting options for the area where you plan to place the lamp.

Advance preparation is important when it comes to evaluating table lamps. Start by measuring the surface on which the lamp will be placed. You ll want to make sure the space can accommodate the size of lamp that you choose. You should also pay attention to any space constraints; for example, allow additional room if you ll be placing the lamp on a table wedged into a corner.

Measuring the space ahead of time will ultimately make it easier when you re evaluating table lamps. You should be sure to measure the height and the surface area of the table, as well as the distance from the floor to about the ear level of the person who will most frequently sit next to the lamp. The bottom edge of the lampshade should align with the person s ear level for maximum illumination. If the lamp will be used for reading or other tasks, make sure the fixture and the lampshade are big enough to illuminate the person s line of sight.

As a safety precaution, you ll also want to make sure that the lampshade does not extend over the edges of the surface that you place the lamp on. A lampshade that overhangs the edge of the table can be easily bumped, knocking the lamp to the ground. This could result in accidental burns from a hot bulb, cuts from a broken bulb, or injury from being struck with a heavy lamp fixture. This also ensure that you ll have enough room on the table for decorative or practical items.

In addition to making sure the size of the lamp is appropriate to the space, you ll also want to consider other aesthetic features of the fixture you choose. Style is, of course, subjective. But you ll want to put some thought into it before you make a decision. Choosing a timeless design in a neutral solid color or a metal fixture will provide you with the most versatility if you decide to move the lamp later on. On the other hand, you may find an eclectic piece to match the decor of your room. If you choose this option, just be aware that you may need to buy a new lamp if you decide to redecorate the room.

The brightness of the lamp is another important factor to consider. You can, of course, change the bulb to adjust the brightness of the light. However, remember that you should not exceed the maximum wattage listed for the fixture. Installing a bulb with a wattage that exceeds this limit can create a fire hazard. While you can always install a lower intensity bulb, make sure the fixture you choose can handle the maximum wattage that you will need. Standard table lamps typically accommodate up to 60 watts; however if the lamp will be used for reading, a brighter wattage may be necessary. Take this into account when making your purchase.

With proper planning, choosing the right table lamps for your home doesn t have to be a difficult task. By making measurements and considering your lighting needs ahead of time, you ll be better equipped to purchase the right lamps for your home.
