Around the 90s, during the beginning of search engine history the websites were virtually unknown. Today in the presence of giant leaders like Google they are all forgotten. The early efforts towards the vast expanse of today’s search engine were results of CERN which is a web-server edited by T. Berners-Lee. The first search engine Archie came on scene in 1990. Alan Emtage, a computer science student from Canada designed it. At that time the public files were minimal and did not require indexing. Post Archie Gopher arrived in 1991, the brain-child of Mark McCahill of Minnesota. He was the first person to introduce keyword search feature and implemented it in Gopher. Veronica and Jughead were the programs which searched file names and titles which Gopher stored.

During that period there was no search engine for a world wide web and most of the catalogues were hand-edited. This led to postings on the web which resembled the modern concept of search engine. These catalogues were used to be known as w3-catalogue which was introduced in 1993. Over the years the search technology has grown by leaps and bounds. Today the search engine has taken more than global implication and there is hardly any subject known to man that it does not encompass.

Online business owners always look for opportunities to promote their businesses online. One of the most effective and efficient ways of website promotion is using search engine submission. Search engine submission is the process of submitting the URL of your website to some popular search engines around the world.

There are two basic methods to go about submission of your URL. You can submit manually and individually to each search engine. You can also make use of software that will automatically submit your website to multiple search engines. Both these techniques have their share of advantages and limitations.

Manual submission is a very tedious process that involves manually logging to each search engine, finding out the suitable category and then submitting the website. The manual effort that is required and the time is its major drawback. But the biggest advantage is that you can find the most suitable category and abide by the guidelines laid down by each search engine thereby increasing your chance of getting accepted.

You can submit your website to one search engine only once so using automated procedure makes it a safer technique. If you are using software for submission, you can submit your website to hundreds of search engine within minutes. Thus the biggest advantage of using software is that the whole process is executed in such a short time. But software might ignore the guidelines laid down by search engine. There is also a risk of not selecting the appropriate category.

Submitting your website to a popular search engine will help you to create link to your website and will gain recognition. If your site gets registered in a number of directory people will visit them often. This will increase the traffic to your site and your business will flourish.
