The latest count is over 12,000. That is the number of research studies on the benefits of omega 3 fish oil. Hundreds of thousands of people have participated. This has resulted in literally tons of information that relate to every part of the human body. In this mountain of data, we can find some common elements that can help consumers’ best use these essential nutrients.
The first real research studies on omega 3 fish oil were done in the 1970s when scientists did not know exactly what an omega 3 was. They studied Greenland Eskimos and found they had almost no "Western" diseases - arthritis, heart issues or brain related problems. Similar observations were made about other groups at different times. Although these people came from different cultures in different parts of the world, they had one thing in common. They ate a lot of cold water fatty fish.
A little background:
The two omega 3 essential fatty acids, which all the research refers to, are DHA and EPA. They are called essential because the body can not make them. They have to be outsourced.
This is an important point because they help regulate the immune system, traffic and messaging between the cells. If you are deficient in these fats, you are more likely to have heart, joint, brain related, hair and skin problems.
The problem is that if you live in the West, you probably do have a deficiency. Ninety percent of us have one due to our typical over processed, vegetable oil laden diet.
Two points:
1] If you read research studies like I do, you will notice that they all use some combination of DHA and EPA to get their results. The other six omega 3s rarely, if ever, get used or mentioned.
2] The overwhelmingly positive results are always accomplished with consistent daily doses. EPA and/or DHA are part of every cell membrane in the body. It takes 60-to-90 days to recycle the unsaturated fat cells in the membranes. Omegas 3s are short term visitors. They only last in the blood a few days.
If you are not getting them in your diet every day, they will not have time to rebalance the cells and start fixing the problems caused by a lifetime of nutritional abuse. For most of us, that means fish oil supplements. Ignore expensive and inefficient alternatives like krill oil.
It is important to note omega 3 fish oil supplements were used in practically all the controlled research studies. This would even include coastal countries where seafood is readily available - like Japan or Norway. Getting the amount of DHA/EPA that we want is difficult no matter where we are.
