This editorial will explain you how to configure in addition to configure the Dynamic DNS feature on a Linksys wireless router. This piece of writing is intended for CCNA students, network engineers, and anyone trying to configure DDNS feature on a Linksys wireless router.

DNS servers allow you to map a domain name (yahoo.com, en.wikipedia.org, ciscoccnabootcamp.com…) to an IP address. Therefore, instead of using an IP address (http ://74.22.33.1, ftp ://51.12.22.35…) to access a web server for example, you can use a domain to do this.

Now, assume that you want to deploy a web server inside your home network. In addition, users should access this web server from the Internet using the URL http ://www.yourdomain.com. To do this you have to:

1. Install and configure the web server.
2. Configure the router to forward incoming HTTP traffic from the Internet to the web server.
3. Buy a static public IP address from your ISP and create a mapping between the public IP address and the domain name http ://www.yourdomain.com. You ISP will assign this IP address to your Linksys router permanently.

You may ask this question: “Why should I buy a static public IP address”?
Because if you did not so, you must change the DNS mapping each time the router’s public IP address changes. The router’s public IP address changes every time it establishes connection to the Internet.

To avoid this, you can use the Dynamic DNS (DDNS) feature. Therefore, you do not have to buy a static public IP address for your router. What you have to do is to create an account at one of the following sites, and save your credentials along with the domain name on your Linksys router: dyndns.org, and tzo.com.

Read the following instructions in order to configure the Dynamic DNS (DDNS) feature:

* Step 1: Open your favorite web browser application, and enter the IP address 192.168.1.1 in the address field. Then press Enter.

* Step 2: In the authentication dialog box, enter the administrator’s username and password. The default values are admin/admin for the username/password. However, on some Linksys router platforms, the default value for the username is the blank and for the password is admin.

* Step 3: Click DDNS.

* Step 4: In the DDNS Service drop-down list, select either DynDNS.org or TZO.com.

* Step 5: Enter your DDNS username or email address, and your DDNS password.

* Step 6: Enter the DDNS URL assigned by the DDNS service in the Hostname/Domain name field.
* Step 7: Click Save Settings.
