Six local artists are planning to demonstrate their individual approaches to animal painting in a program held in conjunction with the museum's animal friends exhibition. What each artist needs to do is create an animal theme painting in the museum galleries and then tell the visitors about how their style and techniques are able to capture the image and spirit of the animals they painted. When it comes to animals, people from different cultures and backgrounds find special meaning in them according to a museum's executive director.

Signified by doves is peace while a buffalo is often used as a spiritual symbol. A good omen can be associated with a red tailed hawk while dogs signify cherished friends. Since the beginning of time, animals have been the subjects of artistic endeavor from petroglyphs to cave murals to oil paintings to jewelry and they remain favored across the world.

According to this female artist she is an avid explorer of styles, techniques, and ideas. Thanks to in workshop presentations, consulting, publications, and a long career of teaching, she developed her methods. Where she is listed is the west's who's who and a founding member of a local society of watercolorists.

It was southern California where a female artist came from and she took up art and watercolor before moving to her hometown in 1983. Her themes range from landscapes and floral studies to portraits of people and animals. As mentioned by the director, she has a style which is a result of her ability to push the watercolor medium into works of unusual size without sacrificing the brilliance of transparent watercolor and her aggressive use of pigment.

Another one of the artists studied at the art center of college of design in Los Angeles and at a famous college. In Chicago, he worked as a graphic designer but he has firsthand experience in national exhibits including the national watercolor exhibition in environment. As well as in local and regional venues, each of the artists will also be making presentations and publications in Springfield, Illinois.

Following the fourth artist's graduation with high honors from New York's school of art was a period of study at the University of California in Los Angeles. She actually won the best of show at Washington school of art's 12th annual competition. A reviewer described her work as giving a precious glimpse of human drama, full of psychological poignancy as parts of a famous director's film.

Actually, the fifth artist earned her painting degree from Kansas university school of fine arts. As she paints in her own interpretive style of realism, she provides the viewers with a feeling of the subject's mood and the atmosphere as well. Not only has she had a number of one person shows but has also participated in the Kansas landscape which is a traveling exhibition shown at the Smithsonian institution in Washington, DC and in juried exhibitions as well.

It was the sixth artist who culminated her study of art and refinement of painting skills after studying Chinese brush painting with a noted Chinese painter for eight years. To the northern New Mexican environment was where she has adapted this style of painting, lifted or erased during creation. As the director of the museum said, they are honored to welcome these distinguished artists from the society of watercolorists to the museum and their commitment to artists and designers working showing up was reiterated.

It is the current animal friends exhibition which has been specially selected for the enjoyment of the young and old. I am sure that all our visitors will enjoy watching these artists create portraits of their own special animal friends in this workshop. During 1992, the society of watercolorists was established and its mission is to encourage the local and national production and appreciation of professional quality watercolors.
