Dogs often act like humans during the most inconvenient times. People and not just dog owners think that pets are almost human and deserving of affection since they can understand and exhibit human emotions. And it is their recognition and study of dogs' moods, likes and dislikes, which make for successful animal portraits.

Wagging his tail and refusing to prick up his ears are instances when a dog shows he resents having his picture taken. He could make work harder fort the portrait artist by deciding to be stubborn during the shoot. To make sure your dog will give an interesting and conspicuous pose, you must startle it with some kind of sound. A sniffer would crane his neck to find the source of the smell, in effect ruining the lines and contours, but a dog who is slightly surprised will simply stand erect.

The best time to photograph a dog is early in the morning, when, he is bright and alert, before he is fed. A hungry dog is always alert and poses more readily. Mornings are also cool times of the day, and so a dog would be keeping its mouth shut more often since it wouldn't be panting so much. Dogs that don't really look good on portraits are tired dogs, as well as dogs with mouths hanging open, except for German Shepherds and Saint Bernards.

The studios of dog photographers resemble in one respect the studios of radio broadcasting stations. Any sound effect imaginable is ready on hand just in case the previously used sound effect does not work. Bird calls, mouse squeaks, duck quacks, pop guns, and dozens of other similar requirements are available.

A breeder expects that when he looks at his dog's portrait proofs he will see a perfect shot of his dog which shows only details which make him valuable. The work of an artist who draws and the work of a dog photographer differ in one aspect. What an artist can see, not what he knows, is what he includes when he draws a picture. When taking canine pictures, photographers must try to get details that should be there rather than details that are readily visible.

When taking pictures of a daschund, it's advisable to exaggerate its length. Make sure that the dogs have all their feet planted solidly on the ground and that their bodies are all tilted slightly. Handling German boxers would be an arduous task. He is often friendly with humans but is liable to be antagonistic where other dogs are around.

There are cases in which amateur photographers forget that taking pictures of dogs is easiest when the dogs are hungry. They stuff the dogs some time before or during the picture taking, and then wind up having dogs who are too lazy and disinterested to continue. It would be easy for a dog to assume his stance if he is alert.

Photographers prefer the absence of the breeder while they are fixing the dog's pose. Pet owners can make quite a scene when they want their dog to feel comfortable, just like a nervous mother, and it is for this reason that photographers do this. The master's presence would be much of an aid since the dog is already aware of the tricks he does. This would be a different matter if various sound effects were used since this would bring out the desired reaction from the animal.
