Water is a valuable resource – this is why it costs money. There are a few simple ways that you can make sure your water bill is not excessive (and save a lot of water at the same time). It does not take a rocket scientist to do this. Most of these methods just require you to replace a few tap and shower heads and not use water at certain times. There are more extreme methods and we will touch on those as well. For the most part however, it is all about not wasting water. We use more water than we actually need to for many mundane tasks such as rinsing dishes, showering and watering our gardens.
Firstly, change your showerhead to a low flow showerhead. Some people are going to be against this because they like having a certain amount of pressure when they are showering. You can still get high pressure, low water usage showerheads. It is more about directing the stream into a smaller area and letting a smaller amount of water through the head. This can lead to dramatic savings in terms of energy and water use. Energy use because you are going to be using less hot water which means the hot water service is not going to be working overtime and water because less water is coming through the head. Your family might need to get used to it if they have been using a high flow showerhead for some time, but you are likely the one paying the bills; just remind them of that.
Secondly, the same sort of low flow fitting can be put onto taps, garden hoses and virtually anywhere else that us a point of use for water. You can save anywhere up to fifty percent of your water usage by doing this to your taps. Of course you will have to practice water saving techniques to get the best use out of this. Instead of running the tap when rinsing off dishes, fill the sink with some water and just rinse off your dishes in the sink. Don’t have the tap running when shaving or brushing your teeth. Don’t water your garden in the hottest part of the day (in fact, installing a small self watering system that is only switched on once a week can also save a great deal of water if you water your garden often).
Thirdly, take care of your tap seals. If your tap seals become worn and you are starting to get leaking taps replace them as soon as possible. It is not a very hard thing to do, just make sure you have the right tools for the job and that the water has been switched off at the mains before doing it. If you need help to do it then call a professional. They will likely need to be replaced yearly so keep an eye out for leaking taps and taps that screw off too far (you are probably eating into the seal if they turn off too far and water still leaks).
