Portrait photography is again being scrutinized as an art form. The portraits of one particular artist are his way of reacting to the traditional confrontational character of portraiture. Characterization became careless and too casual, and this photographer tired of seeing this his whole life of taking pictures.

This is food for thought. Media portraiture is mistakenly perceived as cool when in reality, it's dull. The subjects of the photography simply take on poses for unexpected settings when the photographer tells them to do so.

For this line of work, the sitter suggests engaging the sitter to make more decisions in the shoot so as to remove any form of boredom. In this exhibition there are 13 portraits of creative people living in the city of Pittsburgh and they are specifically described as collaborative. Sitters have the freedom to choose where they want the shot done, and can give other suggestions. In this profession, this is something that some may not be used to.

He does not think ahead for any one project. A discussion to draft the general concept of the photograph is done in an essential preliminary meeting. With the help of the sitter, he tries to look for a site that fits their needs. Usually, a set has to be built using a steel sheet and mirrored glass box to create a cell.

The selection of a writer was a bar scenario, while a sculptor said he would want his portrait be taken with his work. Using bridges as a setting was an idea, but it came out seemingly accidental.

The photographs demonstrate his amazing skill in creating lighting effects that are not at all simple. These were not done during the developing and printing of the pictures. He makes use of colored gels with his lighting equipment to produce effects of color that are both saturated and enticing. The duration of exposure for these photographs is tedious. The time it takes for exposure of the nocturnal portrait outside the bar is 15 minutes, which is ample time for the sitter to step in and out of the camera's range.

Then, he can come back and trace letters in the air using a wand of light. There was no indication in the film that people entered and left the bard during the exposure. You would notice in the photographs taken in the garden of a factory how the lighting produces such simplicity amidst all the chromatic luxury.

The curious thing about him is that he is, as a photographer, entirely self taught, although there appears to be evidence of nothing but extreme professionalism in his work. He seems to exert a lot of control in his work which proves to be quite challenging when collaboration is involved. The artist still decides on the final outcome. The exhibit displays photographs that are reversal prints and they have been professionally printed.
