From years of experience in hanging pictures come about certain rules. Never hang pictures on every single wall you see unless you've always yearned to live in an art gallery and remember that a wall that needs a picture is one that seems empty without it. Over the sofa, a server, a console, a small pier table or in groups are all ideal when you are hanging pictures.

What follows this is another rule. Groupings should never be done wider than the furniture underneath. Hanging pictures closer to one another gives them this unified look even if they are of varying sizes. For example, you may have a prized collection of bird prints but the frames differ in type and size. Hang them close together in pleasing geometrics not frame against frame, however.

Another rule follows. Never forget that the wall is a frame in itself which serves to set off a group of pictures on all four sides even if they are close together. In the process of applying pleasing geometry, pictures should be hung in the formation of a square or a rectangle. Should you possess four pictures all framed alike and of the same size it would look great if you hung them vertically above a small step table, geometrically in a square over the sofa, or in a straight line over a long table. In the absence of a staircase do not resort to the step pattern when hanging pictures. Straight lines meeting at nice right angles make for the best arrangements. There are times when a little regimentation is the better option to take.

Consider having a series of ever changing pictures accumulated over a lifetime, ones with varying sizes and subjects that come to include old family portraits, prints, reproductions, and originals. When it comes to hanging these together framing and matting everything alike would make everything unified. There was a friend who used gold frames for 16 prints matting then in forest green. Being set against a red wall the look was amazing. By matting each picture over her sofa in a different shade a friend was able to add color. Only one subject applies to the pictures and they were of the same size too.

Did you encounter a time when you stared into a department store model room but thought to yourself that it was bare? Regardless of how picture perfect the room is no one ever ate, slept, lived, and took phone calls in there. Such a room lacks individuality. Don't be afraid to display yours in your home.

The selling of furniture is why there is a department store model but in a home you want to achieve comfort and pleasure. The best choice in this case is going for your favorite color. Should you pick colors remember that these can affect the mood of a room. Color is emotional, and different colors inspire different emotions. You should probably go and take a look at some color charts until you find colors that you are drawn to for your space. Your gut is you best friend when making choices here.
