The peak of portrait painting in the 20th century has given this American woman artist a chance to cash in on three continents. Art is now being a source of financial gain, pointed out this abstract painter. Again, there is emphasis being put on human aspect and visage.

More and more universities, hospitals, and industries are requesting for the portraits of their presidents and board chairmen to be painted on canvas rather than photographed. The rich and famous want portraits because they serve as symbols of fortune and ancestry for their children.

The amazing work she has done with her brush has extended its reaches to the United States, Europe, and even Africa. Though she has a studio where she can do her painting, she often does the painting at the home of her subject.

The artist says that it takes her three weeks to paint a portrait in a studio, during which she might have four to seven sittings. In comparison, she can paint a portrait on location in five days. The place where the artist does her painting is a factor that actually affects the quality of her painting. She is affected by the way of life and home the portrait would belong to, so she sometimes arranges a meeting and a meal with her subject.

A very well known actress had her portrait done by the artist, and she liked it so much she used it for the cover of her autobiography. She has made portraits of famous business people, including those who made tire and rubber and those who own the five and dime fortune. And she's also painted on commission a tribal chief in Nigeria and a Dominican monk in Arkansas. When her portraits spread around the world, she became so famous she didn't expect commissions coming from certain people.

Although she doesn't flatter her subjects openly, she does paint them in the most flattering light. Subjects and artist come to some agreement regarding costume. She meets the wishes of those who want to be seen in their portraits wearing university robes or their favorite dresses. Informal wear for women is what she likes best. She recommends that her subjects wait a day for their hairdos to settle and also offers suggestions on makeup.

She and her subjects often talk while she is painting. Observing the movement of her lips allows her to find the smile for the portrait. Feelings of boredom are obviously seen in a portrait. A book of photographs that show the artist's work gives clients an idea of what decisions they make regarding their portraits.

There is a growing popularity for ink, oil, and tempera in sepia tones as well. Of the many sketches she would sometimes put of one person on a canvas, she would put only one which is the most detailed in the foreground. It comes out looking just like something taken from a sketch book. 20 years ago, her career began when a gallery owner insisted on having a self portrait that the artist made hung during a two woman show in New York. Everybody thought it was the best part of the show.
