When Shimano choose the name "Sustain" they must have had something with enduring qualities in mind. Does the Sustain FE live up to this expectation? According to the fishing fraternity the answer is yes. The light weight and fine appearance of this reel does not detract from its power and durability. The Sustain is suitable for use in saltwater or fresh water.
Many professional anglers regard the Sustain as a top performing reel that can withstand the demands of constant use. The reel has amazing smoothness without compromising on power. Savings on weight are achieved by the use of aluminum for the frame and spool, drilling of the spool skirt, and the use of a graphite for the rotor and side plate. What allows this reel to produce spectacular casting is the titanium coating of the spool lip as well as the small circumference of the spool end. The special coating also protects the spool lip from nicks and scratches. The Paladin gear system has been enhanced to provide greater durability in this model. The oscillating worm gear action and the bail arm set-up give optimum results in laying the line neatly back on to the spool. Although it might be small on size it is certainly not lacking in power. Even with a large fish hooked up the drag system really puts the brakes on. As soon as you like you can crank the handle and get line back even if there is still some slippage as the brake does its job.
