Sometimes when you are on the road, you have to be prepared for anything and everything; and this includes any unexpected car problems that may pop up. For instance, when you are thinking of taking a road trip (especially if you are taking a road trip for the first time), it is advisable that you make a list of all of the things that you may need in the event of an emergency.
While it may seem somewhat morbid to think about the bad things that can happen on a trip, it is better to be prepared than to be surprised and not know what to do or how to react in a situation. One of the first things you should getting is a mid sized tupperware bin to store your emergency supplies in. Not only will this contain all of the items, but it will also serve to conceal them so that you don t tempt anyone who may pass by your car and look inside. That being said, the first thing you should have in your emergency road kit should be some sort of a first aid kit. First aid kits can range in price depending on how big of a kit you are getting. Generally, it is a good idea to have a small kit. However, if you know that you are travelling with more than two people, you may want to consider purchasing a larger first aid kit.
The next thing that you should include in your emergency road kit should be a flashlight as well as some battery chargers. You would be surprised at the number of people who break down or have car troubles at night when they are in the middle of nowhere. What better item to have when you are stuck in the middle of nowhere than a flashlight? That being said, prior to your trip, make sure that you pack plenty of batteries (depending on the length of your trip). As for the spark plugs, make sure that you read the directions on how to use them and then practice or have someone who knows what they are doing show you how to use them this way you ll have it in your arsenal of knowledge.
Another item that is good to keep in your vehicle on a road trip is a paper map. Despite the fact that everyone and their mother seems to have a GPS unit or tracking/mapping device, technology can and has failed before. Batteries die and electrical problems happen. What would happen if you had to walk from where you were to a location some distance away? It is always a good idea to carry an updated paper map with you in your vehicle whenever you are traveling. Also, you will want to make sure that you purchase a new map every year or every other year as more roads are built and names change.
The main thing to remember when you are on the road, however, is to always be aware of your surroundings. If you know that you will be travelling through rural areas where cell phone reception may become sketchy, let someone know your route ahead of time. Purchase a calling card as well just in case you need to use it. It is always better to be safe than sorry.
