The Shimano Calcutta is designed for use in both fresh water and salt water. This super Shimano reel is packed with quality features. Using the Shimano Calcutta TE reel it is easy for almost anyone to cast like a pro. In addition you get a bunch of functional features. These include levelwind, high line capacity, light weight, and fine drag adjustments. The drag is made from a material called Dartanium which offers very smooth and effective performance. For a reel that is weighs only around 12 oz it has a lot of power.
The test of the pudding is always in the eating and the best way to test the Shimano Calcutta is on the water to hook up a fish. You would be hard pressed to find an easier casting reel than this. On my first cast I didn't expect to get nearly as much distance as the Calcutta produced. Matched with the right rod, casts of 35 - 40 yards are easily attained. The rod I was using was a Shimano Crucial 7.6 ft which worked well.
If you hook up to a fish that makes a nice run you will experience the awesome strenght of the reel. Any fish taking the bait is soon outmatched by performance of the Shimano TE. I really liked the big knobs on the winder that provide a firm grip even with wet hands. Once hooked up you can wind in steadily without any wobble or jerkiness. This keeps the the fish under control with the drag taking care of any runs that are made. Fish such as tuna weighing 50 pounds are well within the limits using this reel.
When it comes to durability these reels are hard to beat. One reviewer reported using the reel for 70 saltwater fishing trips and when inspected, there was no sign of any corrosion One of the nice things I enjoy about high-end Shimano gear is the way its made to last and to provide high perforance for many years to come. A special anti-rusting material has been used for the bearings in the Shimao Calcutta reels so that even if a little moisture gets in they still won't rust up.
Another nice feature is the addition of an audible clicker to sound the alert when a big fish takes the bait. This is nicely placed for easy access but its not in your way.
