The WAN technology is a fundamental part of the CCNA Certification exam. Thus CCNA students must have knowledge about the WAN equipments and protocols. This provides you information about the benefits , features, and supported platforms/Cisco IOS software released of the Cisco WAN interface card WIC1-1DSU-T1-V2 in order to use and deploy it easily. This article falls under the CCNA syllabus’s objective “Implement and verify WAN links”.
The Cisco WAN interface card (WIC-1DSU-T1-V2) is an updated version of the Cisco WAN interface Card (WIC-1DSU-T1). This card offers additional features with the same performance of the WIC-1DSU-T1 card. The Cisco WIC-1DSU-T1-V2 card can be easily configured and managed, and it provides full or fractional T1 service (it does not allow channelized T1 or ISDN PRI). The FDL feature is disabled by default, and you can configure it to either ANSI or AT&T 54016, but not both at the same time.
Fortunately, you can deploy this card using fewer devices and cables leading to high reliability. In fact, the Cisco WIC-1DSU-T1-V2 card do not need additional space because it is inserted into the Cisco router, and it decrease installation tile and cost because you do not have to purchase a separate serial cable that connects a router serial port to an external DSU/CSU. Notice that by reducing the number of devices to deploy a DSU/CSU unit, you minimize the number of point of failure, which leads to enhanced reliability.
The Cisco WIC-1DSU-T1-V2 card can be configured easily through the Cisco IOS initial setup wizard or through the Cisco router’s CLI (Command Line Interface). Additionally, you can access the router remotely through Telnet or SSH and configure the card from the CLI. This card provides a simplified SNMP management because it can be managed along with the Cisco router as a single SNMP entity.
The Cisco WIC-1DSU-T1-V2 card includes these features: Wet T1 support (new feature not implemented in the Cisco WIC-1DSU-T1 card), Nx64 kbps or Nx56 kbps non channelized data rates, ANSI T1.403 / AT&T Publication 62411 standards.
The Cisco WIC-1DSU-T1-V2 card is supported on these Cisco platforms: 1700(1720, 1721, 1751, and 1760), 2600XM, 2691, 3631, 3725, 3745, and ICS 7750. Cisco 1701, 1710, 1711 and 1712 series do not support the card. In addition, this card is supported in these Cisco IOS software releases: 12.2(15) ZL PCBU special (Cisco 1700 series only), 12.2(17) Mainline, 12.3(1) Mainline, and 12.3(1)T.
There you go, you’re now armed with the basic knowledge needed to use and deploy the Cisco wic 1dsu t1 v2 card.
