Though most people scoff at the thought of acne as a serious medical disorder, the fact is that many people, adolescents and adults alike, suffer through this debilitating condition that scars the body and the psyche of patients afflicted with it. A condition unlike little else, acne can harm the development of self-esteem in adolescents during their formative years, and it can seriously hinder adults trying to make their way through their professional and personal lives. In short, acne really is a serious medical condition, one that is incredibly difficult to treat with any effectiveness.
This is why there is a huge market for acne medications and treatments, and why most people will be more than willing to overspend on over the counter acne medications and treatments that simply do not work. In response to this fact, the producers of the acne drug Accutane created and distributed a new medication to help relieve and treat the most severe cases of acne. Almost immediately, Accutane was heralded as a miracle cure for a condition that has vexed so many people, adolescents and adults alike. The acne treatment was incredibly effective at curing and relieving acne for the people suffering the worst forms of the condition.
However, the elation soon made way for fear and suffering, as the realization set in that the side effects of Accutane were far worse than even the worst case of acne could ever hope to be.
Roche Pharmaceuticals, located in Atlantic City, New Jersey, made Accutane. Roche Pharmaceuticals intended Accutane as a treatment for the cases of last resort where all other forms of treatment had been ineffective. In addition, given the desperate nature of many acne patients, it was little surprise that most did not heed the advisories that there could be potentially dangerous side effects.
Be that as it may, the warning and advisory literature released by Roche Pharmaceuticals never once mentioned the most severe side effects that Accutane patients would soon become all too familiar with. Hundreds of thousands of Accutane patients soon became afflicted with a host of autoimmune disorders such as Crohns disease, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, ulcerative colitis and other inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs) as a result of Accutane use. Each of these conditions is debilitating and chronic, which means that there is no known cure, and few treatments options available for relief from the conditions wide array of symptoms.
Over the course of the past two months, Roche Pharmaceuticals has lost two high profile lawsuits over the many Accutane side effects experienced by acne patients. In both cases, the juries found for the plaintiff in contending that Roche Pharmaceuticals was grossly negligent in their warnings about the seriousness of the Accutane side effects.
There are more than 1,000 more cases pending on court dockets throughout New Jersey, home base for Roche Pharmaceuticals. Because of this, the company faces a very rocky future indeed. Even in the face of recent legal losses, Roche Pharmaceuticals insists that Accutane was completely safe for patients.
