Almost everyone knows someone whose romantic relationship - whether marriage or committed - is in trouble or ‘damaged’. Many people in this exact situation - with a damaged relationship - have no idea of what to do to save it. Some have actually given up and are awaiting the inevitable. This certainly includes those who would really like to get out of the relationship, but it also includes those who are still in loving relationships that they treasure but are floundering. This latter category is the subject of this article.
Both parties must be actively involved to make any repair process in a relationship actually succeed. You will also require an understanding of how to actually do it. Let us return to the prior point for a second. It does not take two people simultaneously coming to the conclusion that a fix to the relationship is needed. Most relationship fixes are initiated by one of the partners and ‘sold’ to the other.
Assuming that you are willing to make the first move, you will need two tools: an understanding of how to diagnose your relationship problems - i.e. analysis skills - and the methodology to repair it. You should concentrate on the former; the latter will much easier to grasp then. A great many duets suffer from the primary causes of the ‘drifting apart’ scenario. {Most men distance themselves from their partner if they feel they are being over-managed, while women drift when the feel that they are not having their emotional needs met. | Men typically move away from their partner when they feel over-controlled or “managed”, while women move away when they feel that their emotional needs are not being met.
When a man attempts to fulfill the emotional needs of a woman he is really performing a foreign or unnatural act. Most men instinctively believe that discussion related to problem resolution is unnecessary and feel ill-equipped to execute same. Most men could not even write out what ‘emotional support’ actually means. Women always understand what is meant by nagging or over-management of their mate - and are usually unable to stop it; even modify its effect. There is your first requirement - finding out what is wrong and obtaining consensus. Once you have that in hand you can move on to the process of reparation.
Repairing a damaged relationship takes work - real, hard work - and it is not for the faint of heart. Successful partners in this regard could, more often than not, write reams on cross-gender understand and communication. Well, that is the area that we are dealing with here.
You should both make a list of what you need and/or what you need eliminated. Then each partner should take the other partner’s list and develop a list - in reverse order of difficulty - defining how they would go about satisfying each item. That then becomes the task list for both of you. Do not agree to do anything at first.
