The business card is perhaps the most powerful and traceable offline marketing medium that you will ever use in your business. Today, business cards are no longer just a piece of paper your hand out to prospects with your contact information, or something you give out just because everyone else has it. More than a marketing material, these cards are used to keep communication line open and to magnetically attract new deals and prospects.

Unfortunately, many business owners couldn’t care less about their business card. To them, these cards are just another advertisement, another piece of clutter in their hands. But as unimportant as they are, business cards are critical to a marketing campaign. Just imagine the thrill you’ll feel in seeing your name in print. Nothing can beat the pride you’ll feel, especially if the card is designed creatively.

So, let’s say you are now convinced in producing your own business card. The question now would be how to make sure your card attracts attention, gets kept, and used. To answer this question it’s important to determine why people keep business cards in the first place.

Take a look at this situation. You met Alice at a house party of a friend. You had a great conversation with her about landscaping. She seemed so interested in garden landscaping that you so eagerly want to give her your business card to contact you for landscaping services. You were so sure she is a hot prospect, but days after you met, she never called. Why could it be?

Well, not all people you meet who eagerly talks about a product or services is not a prospects. In the situation above, Alice could just be talking about landscaping because her neighbor has a cool garden she adores, or because she loved plants. She could also be just someone new in town and simply being friendly.

To easily determine whether someone you met is a prospect or not, here are some things to consider:

• Is he keeping the card as link to a colleague? People often keep cards of colleagues to keep in touch with during free days. It may be best to give them your business card not just as a way to keep in touch, but to refer you to people they know who may need your products or services.

• Is he keeping it as a reference to a supplier? If you own an orchard of exotic plants and flowers and met someone who owns a flower shop, he or she would certainly keep your business card as a potential resource of fresh flowers.

• Is he keeping it to refer your business to others? If you hand out three of your cards to a friend you met yesterday, and that friend has a neighbor who needs your products right away, then he can pass on your card to that neighbor.

• Is he keeping it to update information? Maybe they still have your old phone number and address. To keep them updated of your contact information, they will surely keep your business card.

• He keeps the card just in case he needs it. Admit it, you like keeping cards for the simple reason that you might need it someday. It basically hard parting with cards you think you might need one day.

Keep these things in mind to ensure you create effective and cheap business cards that people are more than willing to keep.
