In the past, taking fish oil supplements was not a big concern. However, starting a decade ago, I started cutting back on the amount of seafood in my diet. The safety issue had become and still is an issue. Millions of people agree and if you are one of them, keep reading.
As the world economy and population grows, so does ocean traffic. Previously clean areas like the Arctic and North Seas are now hot beds of energy production, traffic and two-way trade from northern Russia to Western Europe. Worldwide trade has many benefits. Besides a much greater supply of goods, there is something to be said that countries that have economic ties are less likely to be fighting each other.
However, there is a downside. All the ocean traffic and exploration have made taking fish oil the old fashioned way - from fish - more risky. Man made contaminants like mercury and other heavy metals are now part of the natural food chain. Predators like salmon, mackerel or tuna are rich in omega 3s. They also are rich in ocean toxins.
It is estimated that 70% of the worlds stock is over fished. That and increasing demand has led to more and more fish farms. There are thousands of them around the globe. The problem is that because they are not part of the natural food chain, there is not much omega 3 content in them. The crowded living conditions are also breeding grounds for parasites and viruses. Farm administrators use pesticides and antibiotics. to fight this but they are absorbed by the various species that are raised there.
To make matters worse, many health professionals believe that the biggest nutritional problem that we face are omega 3 deficiencies. Educated shoppers are becoming aware of what seems to be a difficult problem. We can not fix our nutritional issues with the diet. This is why taking fish oil supplements has become increasingly common.
Here is where a commitment must be made. They must be used correctly. It takes several months for the fats in that are now in your cell membranes to cycle out so they can be replaced by omega 3s. This is an important step in keeping or regaining your health. However, omega 3 fats only remain in the blood a few days. This means that you need to take a decent dose daily. Eating seafood or taking a fish oil supplement every now and then will not work.
As far as dosage is concerned, start slowly - 1/2 gram per day will do. Gradually increase the dose comfort level over the next month or so. The Journal of the American College of Cardiology recently published a review of several studies and concluded that about one gram [1000mg] per day is the minimum needed just for health maintenance. The F.D.A. thinks that three grams shroud be the maximum without a doctors approval.
Supplements are not regulated so there is a lot of misinformation out there. The shelves are full of products of both questionable potency and freshness. Ignore any claims of purity unless they can prove it. Stay away from enteric coatings.
Taking fish oil supplements can significantly improve the body’s health. However, taking a quality product is vital. Inferior supplements are better left on the shelves. Good companies will provide lab reports that tell you exactly what is in each soft gel capsule. Their website should also disclose what the fish sources are and where they came from. My website can provide more information on what to look for.
