Long gone are the days where every website needed to cost a small fortune to get created and go live. Expensive web designers, programmers, hosting companies, professional writers and copy editors have almost all been replaced with simplified and streamlined software and sites. Now, there is more than one easy way to make a website for free!
All the programming that needed high level professionals less than twenty years ago can be accomplished through means totally unheard of way back when. Programs and code have been written to do what the program and the code only touched on in the early 1990s.
These template based websites have become very popular. No one needs to know anything about CGI scripting or XTML coding. Many of these sites even come with shopping carts, autoresponders, email, a huge selection of built in animation and graphics, news, and even the ability to use HTML if you want to.
Some of the large search engines even offer their users free websites or at least very cheap websites. A few offer the first year free and after that, it's a few dollars a month to renew. Other than having the free website though, you need to buy / register a URL. This isn't absolutely necessary, however. You could have your company name as a sub file for the hosting company. A bit less professional, but much cheaper.
For example, if you make customer designed wooden bookends and your company name is Kevin's Bookends, you have a choice of www.microsoftlive.kevinsbookends.com for free, or www.kevinsbookends.com once you purchase your own URL or domain name.
Another option that many are taking advantage of in order to stop paying what have become some very expensive monthly upkeep fees, is to use a free blogging site. Certain sites are completely customizable and you still have the opportunity to get your own URL/domain name. In other words, the fact that you are using a blog for your website is totally transparent to your customers.
If this doesn't interest you, you can still search online for free web templates, build your site for free, and then pay a few dollars a month to have your site hosted somewhere.
Many people have the idea that "free" automatically translates into unprofessional or cheap. This is far from the truth. Even an expensive website, designed by professionals with years of experience, can still look unprofessional - no matter how much someone paid to get it done. Some of the best websites out there were done using free software, free templates, and cheap hosting companies. Check out some local companies you know of - gardeners, babysitting agencies, or even small retail stores. Look at the bottom of their home page for the name of who is hosting their website - it most probably is a free online service!
