While traveling by air is fast, traveling by bus is inexpensive, traveling by car is convenient, you could be missing out on the most unique travel experiences- a train.
Most people wouldn't consider traveling by train to be their first or probably even their second choice. The trip would definitely last longer than a flight, and cost more than a bus, and not have the control of traveling by car.
When traveling by train expect to take a long time. Do not ask the dreaded ?Are we there yet??, do not keep asking the train attendants when you will arrive or if you are on time. If you are crossing State borders expect the trip to take a little longer. Traveling by train will be a longer trip than traveling in your car where you can go as fast as you like or the speed limit allows.
Train travel affords a unique opportunity to see countryside you might not otherwise experience. Many sights you might overlook while traveling by airplane are much more visible when traveling by train. To enhance your experience, you may even want to consider studying up on the geography of your route and bringing binoculars to get a really good look. Also, bring a good book and take the time to read, reflect, or even finish preparing that important presentation. One bonus of traveling by train is that there is less motion than travel by bus, so these activities will be easier on the eyes and hands.
Relax and enjoy the scenery. You could see things you never would while flying over them at great heights, or you could see things you would miss while driving. Guidebooks can help you find the sights and know when to look for them. Binoculars can help you see things easier. Or you could read a book by your favorite author or bring a puzzle book.
Remember to be polite and respectful to crew members and attendants on board the train. No one likes to travel with someone who complains or fusses, especially during a long trip. Take time to roam the train and find other passengers that want to talk. You will be on the train for a while and will have a great opportunity to meet other people from different parts of the world.
If you are traveling with children, make sure you bring enough activities to keep them occupied. Not only do you not want to have to deal with your own child bored on a train, neither do other passengers. Bring some books and small quiet toys. Another good idea on the train is hand held video games, just remember to keep the volume down so as not to bother others. Lastly you may want to bring a few snacks and a small pillow or blanket for a nap. This way they will be entertained and you will be able to enjoy your train trip even more.
